This was a magnitude 8.8, that was a magnitude 9.5, we pretty much expected, that the tsunami would be about a third of the size of the Chile tsunami of 1960, in many places that was how big it was, but in Hawaii it was significantly smaller than that.\"\u003cbr/\u003e15. Mid of computers at warning centre\u003cbr/\u003eA tsunami triggered by the massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Chile early Saturday reached Hawaii by afternoon, hours after sirens began sounding alarms to alert residents to potential waves.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile beaches were cleared and roads into tourist-heavy Waikiki closed off, officials said the state escaped unscathed, with initial waves looking more like an extreme fluctuation in the tide than a giant tsunami. \u003cbr/\u003eA tsunami warning was cancelled for Hawaii by 2 pm (0000gmt).\u003cbr/\u003eGerard Fryer, a geophysicist for the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Ewa Beach, said Hawaii had dodged a bullet, while also defending the decision to urge evacuations of coastal areas, saying it was better to be smaller than originally predicted. \u003cbr/\u003eThe highest wave at Hilo measured 5.5 feet high, while Maui saw some as high as 6.5 feet.\u003cbr/\u003eUnlike other tsunamis in recent years in which residents had little warning, emergency officials along the Pacific on Saturday had hours to prepare and decide on getting people out of the potential disaster area.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Hilo International Airport, located along the coast, was closed, and people filled a local grocery store, where shelves with water were mostly empty, save for a few bottles.\u003cbr/\u003eGas stations had
