In China there are over 100 million religious people. Most Chinese do not believe in religions, but we have our own moral standards and spiritual pursuits. Wide of the two writers toasting each other with water bottles\u003cbr/\u003eA former spokesman for Communist China's Cabinet and an American evangelist known for his elaborate, two-day Christian festivals have joined forces to write a book which was launched on Wednesday about the most complex of questions: Does God exist?\u003cbr/\u003eAtheist Zhao Qizheng and preacher Luis Palau have met privately on three occasions over the past 18 months to debate religion and exchange ideas. \u003cbr/\u003eThe result is a book in English and Chinese called \"Riverside Talks: A Friendly Dialogue Between an Atheist and a Christian\". \u003cbr/\u003eAbout 100 Chinese and foreign readers mobbed the pair for autographed copies at a book fair in the capital's exhibition centre. Palau and Zhao gave short speeches before hugging each other and signing the books.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 140-page work is in part a public relations exercise.\u003cbr/\u003ePalau wants to reach out to Chinese people who are curious about religion, while Zhao is hoping to give the West a better understanding of China's culture and beliefs.\u003cbr/\u003eFor now, both Zhao and Palau have agreed to disagree. \u003cbr/\u003eThey said the most difficult questions they have wrestled with are over the origins of the universe and where God came from.\u003cbr/\u003eTheir different agendas also illustrate the complex picture of religion in China today: religions, Christianity included, are thriving as Chinese search for answers amid tumultuous economic and social changes, but the government is struggling to maintain control through restrictive religious policies.\u003cbr/\u003eThe authors, however, warmly praised each other and insisted the point of the publication is less about politics and more about the philosophy of religion.\u003cbr/\u003eZhao, who stepped down as spokesman for China's State Council last year and is now a member of a government advisory body, said it was a way for China and the United States to have bilateral exchanges.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Most Chinese do not believe in religions, but we have our own moral standards and spiritual pursuits. Therefore, communication in this way can promote understanding between religious and non-religious people\", said Zhao. \u003cbr/\u003eAbout 10,000 copies of the book have been printed in Chinese and
