dancing.\u003cbr/\u003eThe result is a new trend that is taking youth culture by storm in the southern city of Lyon. \u003cbr/\u003eTecktonik is the new teenage dance craze sweeping France.\u003cbr/\u003eThe trend, born in the Paris nightclub the Metropolis some seven years ago, is now attracting more and more followers.\u003cbr/\u003eHoards of teenagers meet in the centre of Lyon each Saturday to dance the day away to loud repetitive beats.\u003cbr/\u003eDancers are dressed in skinny jeans, worn low on the waist, many wear florescent bands on their ankles and wrists.\u003cbr/\u003eMost of the outfits are combined with the black and white check patterns.\u003cbr/\u003eSome teenagers wear colourful belt buckles or Mohican hairstyles, but everyone is a mean (cool) dancer keen to show off their elaborate dance moves.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is a look that is easily recognisable, derived from Punk, Glam Rock, Techno and Ska. \u003cbr/\u003eMurphy and Jimmy, identify themselves as Tecktoniks.\u003cbr/\u003eMurphy says the way they look is very important to distinguish themselves from other people.\u003cbr/\u003eDr Kostas Nassikas, a child psychiatrist and sociologist, says each generation wants to look different from their parents and create their own identity. \u003cbr/\u003eTecktonic dancer Clement says the music is a mix of two major electronic music trends, the hard minimalist techno that hails from countries like Germany, Britain or Belgium, and electro-house, more familiar in clubs across southern Europe.\u003cbr/\u003eHe started up the \"Star killer\" meetings on Lyon's main square, Place Bellecour, earlier in 2007. \u003cbr/\u003eSimilar meetings take place near Paris' famous Pompidou centre each Saturday. \u003cbr/\u003eThe idea is that different \"teams\" meet up for dance-offs, the same way hip-hop dancers do. \u003cbr/\u003eAs for learning the steps, everything you need to know is on the web. \u003cbr/\u003eLeny says he has learnt all the dance moves from watching clips on the Internet.\u003cbr/\u003eSebastien says they dance and compete in nightclubs.\u003cbr/\u003eTecktonik and Hip Hop tribes (fashion groups) have developed a friendly rivalry.  \u003cbr/\u003eMohammed, a Tecktonik and his friend Choukri, a break dancer, tease each other about their respective tribes. \u003cbr/\u003eMohammed says Tecktoniks are better than break dancers, whereas Choukri says Tecktoniks look stupid when they dance.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, the \"dance battles\" are not exclusive to one group, and it is not unusual to see a dance-off between a Tecktonik and a hip-hop team.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Tecktonik  the whole notion of gender is blurred, and androgyny embraced. \u003cbr/\u003eBoys have no hang-ups about dancing together, or about wearing make-up. \u003cbr/\u003eGirls, on the other hand, will gladly sport more masculine clothes or haircuts. \u003cbr/\u003eCindy says she got into the trend, in order to be like her friends. \u003cbr/\u003eBut young people don't have an monopoly on dance moves. \u003cbr/\u003ePaul is in his late seventies, but is a devoted fan of the dance and he hangs out with the teenagers to take part in the dance-offs. \u003cbr/\u003ePaul says dances like Tecktonik are as important as traditional dances like the Tango and Fox-trot.\u003cbr/\u003eSaturday night is the highlight of the week, and the teenagers flock to local nightclubs to show off their latest moves. \u003cbr/\u003eDJ Ness says part of the movement's success is that it offers teenagers a whole package: the music, the
