One set was just by using the diesel. When the boats were only using hundred percent diesel, we took a set of readings which covers the levels of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, then SOCs, that is the sulphur dioxides and nitrous oxide. So we have taken the readings on the boats and when the boats started using 5% of bio diesel blend, then again the same set of readings were repeated. Then we saw that there was a 20% reduction in carbon monoxide and there was almost a 60 to 80% reduction in SO2 (sulphur dioxide) levels that we have noticed so far.\"\u003cbr/\u003e14. Waterfront at Mumbai \u003cbr/\u003eThe popular tourist destination of Mumbai, the Gateway of India, is noticing a change at sea.\u003cbr/\u003eAround 40 boat owners who operate there are using cleaner fuel to reduce pollution in an effort to protect the sea which gives them their livelihood.\u003cbr/\u003eA number of diesel-operated boats sail everyday on the sea off Marine Drive, providing transport for about 60,000 commuters and tourists each day.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever the boats emit emissions which are harmful to the atmosphere, including carbon monoxide and sulphur dioxide emissions. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the ferries are about to get more environmentally friendly. \u003cbr/\u003eThe new green boat project is supported by the The Energy Research Institute (TERI) and funded by oil company Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited.\u003cbr/\u003eAnjali Parasnis , an Investigator at The Energy Research Institute, says that by switching to bio-diesel and recycling waste fuel, they can significantly reduce pollution.\u003cbr/\u003eWhat began as a showcase project involving only 10 boats has since gown in size.\u003cbr/\u003eAround 100 boats have volunteered to use a mix of 5 per cent bio-diesel with ordinary diesel.\u003cbr/\u003eBio-diesel is a processed fuel derived from natural sources which can be used as fuel in engines without making any modifications to them.\u003cbr/\u003eBio-diesel burns cleaner and is easily extracted from renewable sources such as oilseeds and animal fats.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is the first time that bio-diesel has been used as a marine fuel in India.\u003cbr/\u003eAnjali Parasnis says a comparison of emissions from the boats using the biodiesel mix with an earlier reading from when the boats were using one hundred percent diesel shows a significant reduction in harmful emissions. \u003cbr/\u003eAs well as the fuel, the lighting on these boats is environmentally-friendly as they are powered by the sun.\u003cbr/\u003ePosters creating awareness about the use of renewable energy have also been put up in the boat.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd boat owners are happy to be part of the scheme and run their boats on bio-diesel.\u003cbr/\u003eThe fuel has been offered at a special price which has meant a lot of savings, says Usman Abdullah Manshi, a boat owner. \u003cbr/\u003eWhile it has made better economic sense for the boat-owners, the passengers are also happy to do their bit to save the planet.\u003cbr/\u003eM.A. Sunderwala travels by boat from the Gateway of India about three times a week and says that passengers would prefer to use something that does less harm to the environment.\u003cbr/\u003eThere are plans now to take the project further.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Energy Research Institute wants all the boats that operate around Mumbai, around three thousand, to switch to bio-diesel fuel.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is in response to a wider national movement to reduce India's petroleum import costs
