Wide of two cars on display after the race\u003cbr/\u003eElectric car design in Iran is somewhat behind that of many other countries. \u003cbr/\u003eBut a competition that draws upon the talents of different university researchers is hoping to change that. \u003cbr/\u003eAs oil consumption reaches record highs in Iran and the threat of international sanctions looms, calls for alternatives to petrol have grown louder.\u003cbr/\u003eIn response Iranian authorities are encouraging universities and the car industry to speed up the development of electric cars.\u003cbr/\u003e37 student teams from universities across Iran met at Tehran's Azadi sports complex to race their cars.\u003cbr/\u003eThe annual event, organised by the Sharif University of Technology, sees Iran's top universities competing to design the best electric car.\u003cbr/\u003eThe cars are rated on a range of criteria including speed, beauty, and environmental sustainability.\u003cbr/\u003eParticipant Yasser Eskandari Cherati, head of Babol's Noushiravani University of Technology, says that Iran's technology used in producing electric and hybrid cars is far behind in comparison to other countries. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I should say that both in terms of speed and acceleration we are far behind industrial and European countries. You know the third world countries are just beginning to realize that they should go towards developing renewable energy sources and that they shouldn't rely on their oil so much,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eThe cars have to perform manoeuvres as well as meeting design requirements like separate doors for the driver and passengers. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd all the cars must be powered by electric batteries that allow them to drive for at least 80 kilometres (50 miles).\u003cbr/\u003eSome teams claim to have built their electric cars in just two months. \u003cbr/\u003eIt took Yasser's team a full year to produce their car.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Starting with the design stage, which included conceptual design and detail design, it took five or six months, and the manufacturing stage took another three to four months. The special feature of our car is an AC traction and 8 plus horse power,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's hoped a car that meets competition standards might clear the air in polluted Tehran. \u003cbr/\u003eSuch a car might be a solution to the oil and petrol sanctions that Iran might face in the future.\u003cbr/\u003eIran has been subject to international sanctions due to its nuclear programs and recently there were calls to impose sanctions on Iran's patrol imports.\u003cbr/\u003eHamideh, an engineering student at Sharif University of Technology, says she thinks electric cars are a top priority for Iran: \u003cbr/\u003e\"Let's imagine that we are subject to petrol sanctions which are very likely and spoken about these days and in fact, are on the table. You know this (developing electric cars) would solve the problem, because we can produce electricity from water and produce solar electricity. We can also produce electricity from fossil fuels but the problem with the petrol still exists. And we already have our petrol rationed,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003eIran's prestigious Sharif University of Technology has been the leading university in developing cutting edge technologies.\u003cbr/\u003eTheir designed Towsan electric car was one of the best in the competition.\u003cbr/\u003eSharif University has been a key consultant for Iran's giant car makers, and with the government call for developing cheaper and more environmental friendly cars and in the absence of foreign investors, they will be a trusted partner. \u003cbr/\u003eMohamamd Dourali, member of the
