president to name somebody even older than himself as his No. 2.\u003cbr/\u003eBut in the debate that followed the Cuban leader's false start on generational change, one man's quick ascendance has largely been overlooked. \u003cbr/\u003eA product of Cuba's post-Revolution Baby Boom, Marino Murillo Jorge is now charged with implementing Castro's make-or-break economic changes from a position of singular importance.\u003cbr/\u003eThe blunt-talking, 50-year-old economist stands at the head of a very small class of relatively prominent, relatively youthful, Cuban officials who have broken out of obscurity and taken up positions alongside the silver-haired generation that has ruled this island since 1959.\u003cbr/\u003eA stocky man, often seen in an XXL guayabera shirt, Murillo is more technocrat than charismatic orator, but he just might have a key role in the island's post-Castro future, if he stays in favour that long.\u003cbr/\u003eMurillo's relative youth sets him apart from most of the other 14 members of the Communist Party's ruling council named in April, which is headed by Castro and First Vice President Jose Ramon Machado Ventura, also an octogenarian.\u003cbr/\u003eRapid ascent has sometimes been perilous under Fidel and Raul Castro. \u003cbr/\u003eIn 2009, two rising stars thought to be possible successors, Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque and Vice President Carlos Lage, were fired and publicly shamed in local media before disappearing into obscurity.\u003cbr/\u003eStill, Raul Castro said at the Party Congress that the time is near when a new generation of leaders must take the reins, and he announced term limits for all political offices. \u003cbr/\u003eHe said officials erred in the past by promoting the wrong people, not by undercutting young protegees, and that leadership changes could be in store at party gathering in January 2012.\u003cbr/\u003eMurillo is Raul Castro's economic czar, tasked with guiding Cuba through what is arguably its greatest challenge since the \"special period\" of the early 1990s, when billions in aid and trade from Moscow disappeared along with the Soviet Union.\u003cbr/\u003eScant details about Murillo are a matter of public record, including basic questions like where he lives, whether he's married or if he has any children. \u003cbr/\u003eMultiple requests by The Associated Press to interview Murillo or other officials were not granted, and his bare-bones Communist Party bio gives only his date of birth, education and a brief rundown of his prior posts.\u003cbr/\u003eMurillo was born in 1961, two years after the triumph of Fidel Castro's revolution and as the bearded leader was proclaiming the socialist nature of his government. \u003cbr/\u003eHe was active in the youth wing of the Communist Party.\u003cbr/\u003eTrained as an economist, Murillo began his career at low-level government jobs and rose gradually through several ministries. \u003cbr/\u003eHe joined the Communist Party in the early 1990s and studied at the military School of National Defence, though his position in the armed forces is not known.\u003cbr/\u003eHe was also a professor at the Central University of Las Villas and studied in the former Soviet Union. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever Murillo's style is far from academic. \u003cbr/\u003eHe talks in simple words and has body language more befitting a bureaucrat or accountant, frequently adjusting his spectacles on his nose as he speaks.\u003cbr/\u003eIn March, Murillo was promoted to head a commission overseeing both the Economy Ministry and the economic changes. \u003cbr/\u003eAmong his tasks is to improve efficiency, slash bloated state spending and allow greater space for small private enterprise.\u003cbr/\u003eMurillo's political staying power may be closely linked to how well Cuba weathers that storm. \u003cbr/\u003eWhile it is too early to anoint him as a
