quest to \"map the world\".\u003cbr/\u003eThe city of Taipei will never look the same once the Tele Atlas van is finished digitally mapping its streets.\u003cbr/\u003eYet this is no ordinary van.\u003cbr/\u003eThis bright orange van is equipped with six roof-mounted cameras which collect pictures of all the city's roads and landmarks.\u003cbr/\u003eThree cameras face toward for a \"driver's point of view\", while two cameras are strategically placed at the rear of the van. \u003cbr/\u003eOne additional camera is mounted on the passenger's side so it can capture any passing road signs.\u003cbr/\u003eAll the images collected are relayed on a screen and stored in the onboard computer. \u003cbr/\u003eThe idea is the brainchild of Tele Atlas, a Dutch-based company that will eventually operate 50 vehicles throughout the region.\u003cbr/\u003eAlain de Taeye is the company's Chief Executive Officer.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says that by collecting the video images of the city's streets they will be able to generate a 3-D map which includes street signs and other road information.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says one day maps will be three dimensional and provide users with an exact copy of what is on the ground.\u003cbr/\u003eAll the information gathered by the van is accessible on a variety handheld Personal Navigation Devices (PND).\u003cbr/\u003eAnd make no mistake, as the company's logo reads, they intend to \"map your world\".  \u003cbr/\u003eFounded in 1984, Tele Atlas competes with United States-based Navteq to provide digital mapping data to major companies including Microsoft, Yahoo, MapQuest and Google.\u003cbr/\u003eDe Teaye says they're hoping to make a digital copy of the real world.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the engineers involved in the project is Peng Peng.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says many factors need to be considered when mapping, such as traffic and the weather.\u003cbr/\u003eAll data collected by the van is sent to one of the company's two production facilities in Poland and India for processing by analysts.\u003cbr/\u003eAnalysts says that in recent years the use of electronic devices such as Global Position Systems (GPS) and Personal Navigation Devices has increased considerably.\u003cbr/\u003eSome of these trends are studied by the private think-tank the Topology Institute, in Taipei.\u003cbr/\u003eHunter Hsu, one of the researchers, says he expects the use of these devices like GPS to grow considerably in mainland China.\u003cbr/\u003eBecause of the sizable growth expected in the market expect more orange vans to be prowling the streets in the near future.\u003cbr/\u003eDevices like PNDs and GPSs rely on satellites to pinpoint the user's exact location and chosen
