Wide of river with boat\u003cbr/\u003eA small island located in the world's largest delta region in Eastern India is seriously threatened with being wiped off the map. \u003cbr/\u003eNearly half of the Ghoramara island in Sunderbans is already submerged under water, leaving thousands of people homeless and destroying vast tracts of cultivable land.\u003cbr/\u003eDesperately clinging onto life - this partially submerged palm tree is a stark reminder that climate change is bringing real change to the world's landscape. \u003cbr/\u003eSituated approximately 150 km from Calcutta , the small island village of Ghoramara is slowly sinking.\u003cbr/\u003eThe vanishing island is part of Sunderbans , a unique mangrove ecosystem spread across India and Bangladesh, and the largest intertidal delta in the world.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring the last 30 years , Ghoramara has been been reduced to nearly half its original size .\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to a recent report released by the Centre for Science and Environment ( CSE ) , a Delhi-based research and advocacy organisation, Ghoramara's land mass has been extensively eroded by the advancing waters from 9 sq km to about 4.7 sq km. \u003cbr/\u003eGhoramara's submergence is partly caused by the flow dynamics of rivers coming down the Himalayas into the Bay of Bengal.\u003cbr/\u003eBut most experts agree that the rising sea triggered by global warming is the primary factor behind the islands in Sunderbans going under water.\u003cbr/\u003eNearly 7000 inhabitants have fled the island over the years and many more are getting ready to face the same fate as their homes and farm lands are destroyed.\u003cbr/\u003eMany islanders have been forced to move to a displaced people's camp on the nearby Sagar Island while some others have relocated to cities like Calcutta.\u003cbr/\u003eThe villagers are facing a hard time as making a living from farming is becoming increasingly difficult.\u003cbr/\u003eSujata Das , head of the local village council of Ghoramara , says the land is shrinking and people are suffering . \u003cbr/\u003eAnother island in the vicinity, known as Lohachara, has already disappeared. \u003cbr/\u003eGhoramara seems to be heading the same way - local people talk of changes in weather conditions and the coastal areas get frequently inundated by cyclones and rainstorms.\u003cbr/\u003eThe changing climatic cycles have directly affected the livelihood of the villagers through their impact on agriculture , aquaculture and fishing.\u003cbr/\u003eSwathes of coastal land are lined with abandoned mud houses , fields and boats - destroyed by water as people are forced to shift to higher ground. \u003cbr/\u003eEnvironmental expert Prof. Pranabesh Sanyal says Ghoramara is now home to a large number of climate refugees who've lost their land and livelihoods.\u003cbr/\u003e66 year old farmer Amod Kumar Mondal is among the 5000-odd people left in Ghoramara .\u003cbr/\u003eFor the last two years , Mondal and his family - including two young grand children - have lived in a hut made on another villager's land.\u003cbr/\u003eHis own land was washed away along with his house , destroying his traditional livelihood based on agriculture .\u003cbr/\u003eNow Mondal does odd jobs to make a living , including playing drums and working as daily labour for other farmers.\u003cbr/\u003eThe plight of the islanders in Ghoramara is not of their own making.  \u003cbr/\u003eThere are no factories emitting pollutants in Ghoramara and no motorised traffic , factors generally associated with environmental damage leading to global warming.\u003cbr/\u003eExperts say the rise in sea level in Sunderbans is higher than the global average.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We found that it is much more than the global average.It is 3.14 mm per year here whereas global average is 1.82 mm per year. some land left for paddy cultivation.\u003cbr/\u003eBut he lives in constant fear of losing it .\u003cbr/\u003eHaldar says he is worried about his survival in the future as there seems to be no end to the lsland's continuing erosion. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the Centre for Science and Environment ( CSE ) , Ghoramara's plight needs urgent attention.\u003cbr/\u003eThe CSE report says that Ghoramara is symbolic of a problem that transcends local, regional and national boundaries, and that the voices of climate change victims and refugees must be
