been the where the famous temple of Zeus was situated.\u003cbr/\u003eHigh in the windswept Greek mountains, archaeologists are trying to unearth the mystery of the ancient god Zeus.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Greek mythology, Zeus was the god of the sky.\u003cbr/\u003eFor centuries the mountain has been linked with the myth of Zeus, and the mysterious rituals supposed to have been performed.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to legend, Zeus's mother handed over her infant to nymphs to save him from her husband Kronos.\u003cbr/\u003eNikos Tsouroukos, from the nearby Thissoa village, says legend has it that Zeus was saved a group of nymphs while escaping from his father.\u003cbr/\u003eToday the barren mountaintop is an important archaeological site.\u003cbr/\u003eAs with many ancient historical sites, legend and history are tightly woven together.\u003cbr/\u003eWritings from ancient Greek authors claim that dreadful and mysterious rituals were conducted at the altar of Zeus. \u003cbr/\u003eMortals were strictly forbidden from entering the sanctuary, punishable by death or even worse.\u003cbr/\u003eMichalis Petropoulos, the regional antiquities director, says only priests were allowed to worship at the temple.\u003cbr/\u003eThe penalty for trespassing, according to local folklore, was the immediate transformation into a wolf.\u003cbr/\u003ePetropoulos has been co-managing the Lykaion excavation site, with the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and the University of Arizona. \u003cbr/\u003eAnthropologists have been researching the possibility of human sacrifices being conducted at the mount Lykaion temple. \u003cbr/\u003eBut so far only pottery remains and animal bone fragments have been recovered.\u003cbr/\u003ePetropoulos says, for now, no evidence that indicates human sacrifice has been unearthed.\u003cbr/\u003eYet the recent findings suggest some kind of worship was taking place on the mount as early as 3000 B.C.\u003cbr/\u003eThat was about 900 years before Greek-speaking people settled in the region.\u003cbr/\u003eHow the rituals were carried out still remains a mystery. \u003cbr/\u003ePetropoulos says the few written records available point to some unusual practices occurring.\u003cbr/\u003eWhat actually happened is anyone's guess, say the researchers.\u003cbr/\u003ePetropoulos says the digs may prove the worship of the
