But bullets.\u003cbr/\u003eThe security company owner was also inspired by personal experience. \u003cbr/\u003eLike thousands of other South Africans he has been the victim of violent crime.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen he worked as a security guard Ward was often ambushed by armed gangs trying to steal the large amounts of money he was transporting.\u003cbr/\u003eThe only protection then available was bullet proof vests which leave shoulders and lower torso exposed to hostile fire.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the advantages of the modern bulletproof shield is that it is strong enough to withstand a knife attack as well as bullets.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"I felt that there was a stronger need for a bullet resistant product. And obviously being from Natal and the Zulu shield  being part of my history and upbringing I then decided to design, and because of the contour of the shield and the fact that you could use the shield to protect your head and throat in conjunction with wearing a bullet-proof vest.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPERCAPTION: Garth Ward, inventor of the new shield\u003cbr/\u003eIn designing the shield Ward chose the highest-strength steel available.\u003cbr/\u003eWard believes that motorists afraid of being shot in a vehicle hijacking could also protect themselves with one of his shields.\u003cbr/\u003eWard not only designs shields.
