Some fear the satellite will crash into the earth's atmosphere, spreading the...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eEnglish/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eAn American launch satellite with 72 pounds of carcinogenic plutonium is approaching earth in a final orbit that will send it on toward Saturn. \u003cbr/\u003eSome fear the satellite will crash into the earth's atmosphere, spreading the deadly plutonium. \u003cbr/\u003eOthers say the space craft will continue as programmed on its way to Saturn.\u003cbr/\u003eWith less than 24 hours to go before the satellite Cassini enters earth's gravitational pull,  NASA scientists are saying that everything \"A-OK\".\u003cbr/\u003eCassini is programmed to use the Earth's gravity to sling it out into space on a seven year voyage to the planet Saturn.\u003cbr/\u003eNASA scientists say the three-and-a-half billion dollar (US) spacecraft poses virtually no risk to Earth as it zooms within 725 miles of the planet to gain momentum for the final leg toward Saturn.\u003cbr/\u003eThe largest and most expensive unmanned spacecraft to date, Cassini is again stirring up anti-nuclear activists concerned about the 72 pounds of carcinogenic cargo.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen Cassinni was launched two years ago, hundreds of protesters demonstrated against sending radioactive material into space.\u003cbr/\u003eNow that Cassini is returning, the protesters are again raising the issue of a possible nuclear accident.\u003cbr/\u003eDemonstrators threatened to chain themselves to the launch pad and then filed lawsuits to stop the launch.\u003cbr/\u003eThe flyby begins Tuesday evening and as the satellite swings around the Earth, it will change direction and speed relative to the sun.\u003cbr/\u003eCassini's pathway around the Earth will take it 725 miles from the surface.\u003cbr/\u003eThat's nearly twice as far from Earth as the International Space Station is orbiting.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd, nearly three hundred miles higher than the Hubble Space Telescope orbit.\u003cbr/\u003eMost shuttle flights orbit at about 130 miles from Earth.\u003cbr/\u003eThe spacecraft uses plutonium to power its dozen scientific instruments.\u003cbr/\u003eThe instruments are packed in especially strong in case of an accident during the flyby.\u003cbr/\u003eNASA scientists suggest that even if the capsules of plutonium were to enter the atmosphere, they would vaporize and the effect for the world population would be less than one dental x-ray over 50 years.\u003cbr/\u003eOnce the satellite swings into the new orbit, it will travel on a gently meandering course toward Saturn, reaching the \"ringed\" planet in the year 2004.\u003cbr/\u003eALSORAN ON:  1200-1230 Europe Update\u003cbr/\u003eSpace, Recent\u003cbr/\u003e1.
