preparations.\u003cbr/\u003eGianna Angelopoulos-Daskalaki, head of the Athens organising committee, ATHOC, promised the I-O-C executive board on Wednesday that work would be completed by 2004 and all the venues would be ready in some shape or form.\u003cbr/\u003eAngelopoulos-Daskalaki, credited with persuading the I-O-C to award the games to Athens in the first place, took over as chief organisers last year after then I-O-C President warned that Greece was in danger of losing the Games if it did not meet construction deadlines.\u003cbr/\u003eBut despite recent progress, work is still behind its original schedule.\u003cbr/\u003eThere has been speculation in the Greek media that certain venues may be built as temporary structures rather than permanent ones.\u003cbr/\u003eThis was denied by Angelopoulos-Daskalaki, although she said there were contingency plans in the event of unforeseen hurdles. \u003cbr/\u003eShe cited the example of the canoe and slalom kayak course which was recently shifted by the government to a site near Athens' old airport following objections that the original venue was on an ancient archaeological site. \u003cbr/\u003eShe refused to specify which further plans might be subject to change.\u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile, in Athens, Premier Costas Simitis travelled to Moscow on Sunday to address the formal I-O-C general assembly, in another apparent attempt to bolster the flagging preparations.\u003cbr/\u003eAthens organisers recently managed to persuade authorities to lift a ban on construction of new hotels and hope that at least 4-thousand new rooms will be provided in the next three years. \u003cbr/\u003eThey have won promises from hoteliers that 90 percent of all existing rooms will be reserved for Olympic officials and sponsors.\u003cbr/\u003eWork
