Low angle shot of woman walking and security personnel on street\u003cbr/\u003eWildlife authorities in the state of Jammu and Kashmir in northern India are trying to conserve a key species to the region, the Kashmiri stag locally known as the 'Hangul.'\u003cbr/\u003eSeveral research institutions are working together to conduct a census of Hangul at Dachigam National Park to identify threats to the species and devise a strategy to protect them.\u003cbr/\u003eHangul, the Kashmiri stag or 'Cervus elaphus hanglu', is a critically endangered species which is now mainly found in the Dachigam National Park in the state of Jammu and Kashmir in northern India. \u003cbr/\u003eKashmir has long been divided between India and Pakistan and both countries claim the region. \u003cbr/\u003eTwo wars have been fought over Kashmir, and militant separatist groups have been fighting since 1989 to end Indian rule. \u003cbr/\u003eMore than 68,000 people, most of them civilians, have been killed in the uprising and subsequent Indian crackdown.\u003cbr/\u003eBut it is not only local residents who have been affected by the fighting.\u003cbr/\u003eThe hangul's numbers have diminished over the years too.   \u003cbr/\u003eIn 1989, the state's Hangul population was estimated to be 918. Nine years later by 1998, the number had dropped to between 107 and 190. \u003cbr/\u003eWildlife officials blame the decline on poaching and the loss of habitat.\u003cbr/\u003eState warden, Rashid Naqash, says a census of the hangul population has been carried in the Dachigam National Park and surrounding areas including Dara, Nishat, Brain, as well as in adjoining forests such as Akhal, Najwan and Ganiwan.\u003cbr/\u003eNaqash describes the region as the \"last bastion for the Hangul\" and stresses that the species is a \"flagship species\" for the state of Jammu and Kashmir. \u003cbr/\u003eOfficials taking part in the census, hope to determine exactly how many hanguls remain and to collect fresh data including the number of males and females now living among them.\u003cbr/\u003eFor this reason, any samples which show signs of life are crucial to their study.\u003cbr/\u003e\"There were the dung samples, the hair samples or sometimes the dead carcass, we tried to look for that,\" says veterinary surgeon, Shabir Ahmad. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The aim was only to know what is the health status of these animals, whether these animals, they are in the good survey and report back the sightings to the authorities.\u003cbr/\u003eThey also try to identify the problems faced by the animals in their habitat and to provide a solution for a scientific management for those problems.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The priority is, for the state government to conserve this species and to work on its long term conservation plan,\" Naqash says.\u003cbr/\u003ePast census data collected by the Jammu and Kashmir government was not very accurate.\u003cbr/\u003eAccordingly, census officials plan to use high-tech equipment like the Global Positioning System and satellite imagery to monitor the endangered hangul.\u003cbr/\u003eAware of the dwindling numbers of the hangul, the state government of Jammu and Kashmir has prepared a special five-year Recovery Plan.\u003cbr/\u003eLalit Kumar, Official, Wildlife Institute of India, says the hangul has faced human disturbance with the presence of paramilitary forces working in the upper reaches of Dachigam. \u003cbr/\u003eThe main activities under the project will include a survey and census of hangul, the purchase of modern field equipment and satellite imaging software, a habitat improvement plan and
