Congratulations for the winners.\" \u003cbr/\u003eSUPERCAPTION: Mate Granic, Croatian Foreign Minister\u003cbr/\u003eIf the preliminary results indicate the final count, that would spell the end of the H-D-Z's nearly ten year grip on power since Croatia broke away from Yugoslavia in 1991.\u003cbr/\u003eFinal results may not be known until Friday, pending the arrival of votes from 47 countries where Croat expatriates cast ballots. \u003cbr/\u003eSo far no serious irregularities have been reported the head of the election commission.\u003cbr/\u003eThey were choosing about 150 seats in the lower house of parliament.\u003cbr/\u003eThe near record turnout indicates Croats' awareness that this vote would be critical in determining whether the country will remain on the authoritarian and nationalist path laid down by the late president or move toward greater democracy and closer ties to the west.\u003cbr/\u003e55 parties were competing in the election. \u003cbr/\u003eThe exact number of seats will depend on the size of the expatriate turnout.\u003cbr/\u003eExpatriates, many of them in neighbouring Bosnia-Herzegovina, began voting Sunday.\u003cbr/\u003eCroatia is at the crossroads of the Mediterranean and the Balkans, and most Croats feel closer to Western Europe. \u003cbr/\u003eBut many fear that joining the European Union or NATO could cost some of their national identity.\u003cbr/\u003eThe coalition also has promised to shift power from the presidency to the parliament.
