Close of machine \u003cbr/\u003eFreezing your fat cells is one of the latest beauty techniques being used in the battle of the bulge.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's called cryolipolysis and it's one of a raft of new therapies aimed at keeping us looking young and lean without too much effort.\u003cbr/\u003eAthletes use freezing temperatures to help repair their muscles, now the beauty industry is using the concept to fight fat.\u003cbr/\u003eAli Miller is a 53 year old mother with a fourteen year old daughter and younger son.\u003cbr/\u003eShe considers herself to be the most unlikely candidate for beauty therapies of any sort.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says manicures and pedicures are alien to her, she's even been known to cut her own hair, but now she's completely sold on the cryotherapy treatment she's received at the Cosmetic Skin Clinic.\u003cbr/\u003eThe clinic calls the treatment Cool Sculpting after the machine used to deliver the treatment.\u003cbr/\u003eIt was developed at Massachusetts University in 2009 and the Cosmetic Skin Clinic says it's been approved by the US Federal Drugs Administration and the EU.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Clinic is run by Dr Tracey Mountford, a specialist in non surgical cosmetic treatments.\u003cbr/\u003eThe extra flesh, including the fat cells, are sucked into the machine which reduces the temperature to the point where the fat cells crystalise and fragment.   \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Mountford when we normally put on weight our fat cells expand and they contract when we lose weight, but they do not disappear completely.\u003cbr/\u003eMountford says the cryotherapy actually destroys the cell.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says: \"What this technology does is it permanently destroys that cell so it cannot refill again. I mean most women will go up by two or three kilos from time to time and that's perfectly acceptable, but it is a very very durable treatment and because the fat cells are destroyed, those areas will not gain weight again.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAli Miller says she was always reasonably fit, but hated the bulge around her waist.\u003cbr/\u003eMiller felt compelled to find a solution after a friend suggested her stomach might be permanent because of her genetic make up.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says: \"I no longer had a waist and I was conscious of my tummy, a bulge that I just couldn't hold in and it started up here as well so it wasn't very nice in fact I felt I looked pregnant half the time you know. So I said oh I don't know and then somebody about two weeks later when I said oh I hate my stomach and they said oh I just think it's genetic you know and I thought, no it's not! But it was just this trigger in my mind that I thought I don't have to be like this I am going to give this a go because I'd never do liposuction or anything and I thought oh I'll give it a go.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBefore today Miller had only had one area of her stomach treated, but she argues it was enough to make everyone notice.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says: \"People have said to me gosh you're looking really slim you've lost loads of weight and I said actually I've lost no weight I deliberately kept my weight the same in fact I might even be a pound or two up from what I was before because actually every time I put weight on it went on there (stomach), now I feel much more able to not worry about my weight because I've got a flat stomach so yes this is hopefully going to even get my waist back to what it was when I was eighteen.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThere are several clinics that are investing in these machines and the treatment is becoming more accessible, but as with most new cosmetic treatments, it is expensive.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Skin Clinic charges �800 ($1,300 USD) per session.\u003cbr/\u003eTackling a large spare tyre around your middle could run into thousands of dollars. \u003cbr/\u003eAlso looking slimmer doesn't mean you are healthier.\u003cbr/\u003eMountford says: \"This technology does not do anything about viceral fat no and it's that fat that does
