conservation. \u003cbr/\u003eOne nature park in Western Kenya combines an animal sanctuary with conservation and educational facilities. \u003cbr/\u003eKitale Nature Conservancy is a private eco-tourism attraction and animal sanctuary. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is home to hundreds of deformed or injured domestic animals. \u003cbr/\u003eGenetic mutations make many of these creatures unfit for livestock and rejected by local people. \u003cbr/\u003eIts Moses Longitio's job to take care of the animals. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says, when he started working on the farm, the deformities frightened him and people warned him that he could bring a curse to his family.\u003cbr/\u003eLocal traditions in many parts of Kenya regard deformed animals as a curse and often they are killed. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the park hopes to show visitors that mutations are all part of the theory of evolution. \u003cbr/\u003eBoniface Ndura, Executive Director of the conservancy, says that when he started the park twenty years ago it was difficult to find many deformed animals, but now the park is known across the region and people get in touch with them to offer suitable creatures. \u003cbr/\u003eThe park hosts many school excursions from all over Kenya. \u003cbr/\u003eFelista Chepng'eno, a high school student, she says she came to see the deformed animals for herself. \u003cbr/\u003eShe says the bible teaches people to look after such creatures. \u003cbr/\u003eMama Nduta lives near the park, but this is her first visit. \u003cbr/\u003eIn addition to educating local people about genetic deformities, the park is also raising awareness about the problems of climate change. \u003cbr/\u003eVarious models depict what may happen if energy consumption and pollution is not curbed. \u003cbr/\u003eStephen Mwangagi, park manager, says the project is designed to engage young people with the issues of global warming. \u003cbr/\u003eBoniface Nduta agrees that encouraging young people to tackle the problem of climate change is important. \u003cbr/\u003eIn 2006 the European Union donated KSH 2 million ($29,000) through the Tourism Trust Fund to assist in further development of recognised Kitale Nature
