\u003cbr/\u003eIn Bangladesh, campaigners are working to better the lives of those excluded from mainstream society, through education and rehabilitation.\u003cbr/\u003eIn a country where the yearly income is around $320 US Dollars, improving attitudes to disability is never going to be easy.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is estimated that out of a population of 145 million, disabled people make up around 5.6 per cent of the Bangladeshi population, according to the Centre for Disability in Development (CDD).\u003cbr/\u003eThe CDD is a local NGO, that runs a series of projects across the country.\u003cbr/\u003eIn addition, the government of Bangladesh has pledged to uphold the UN's Convention on Rights of Persons with Disabilities.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Convention on Rights of Persons with Disabilities was established by the UN in 2006, with the aim of protecting the human rights of people affected with disabilities.\u003cbr/\u003eMichael Stein, from Harvard University Law School, says the UN convention guarantees disabled people the right to participate equally in society.\u003cbr/\u003eUnder the convention, access to adequate education and health services are fundamental rights of the disabled.\u003cbr/\u003eKhandaker Jahurul Alem, from the Asia Pacific Disability Forum, says it is the right of every disabled person to have access to education and health services.\u003cbr/\u003eBut economics and money also play an important role in changing attitudes.\u003cbr/\u003eNick Craft, from the World Bank, says there are solid economic reasons for tackling disability rights.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says not including disabled people into the Bangladeshi economy can cause a 1.7 per cent drop in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP)\u003cbr/\u003eThis is how much some countries spend on education programmes, according to Craft.\u003cbr/\u003eBy pioneering innovative development programmes in Bangladesh, some hope they can be copied across the region.\u003cbr/\u003eKhandaker Jahurul Alem says they hope to replicate successful development programmes in other countries.\u003cbr/\u003eOne programme the organisers hope to replicate is the brainchild of the Centre for Disability in Development (CDD).\u003cbr/\u003eEstablished in 1996, it helps to bring people with disabilities into mainstream society.\u003cbr/\u003eActivities range from training disabled people, to educating members of partner organisations.\u003cbr/\u003eAnika Rahman Lipy, from the CDD, says their main role is to provide training not only to therapists, but to the families of those afflicted with disabilities.\u003cbr/\u003eFor many, educating disabled people is crucial to changing attitudes.\u003cbr/\u003eKhandaker Jahurul Alem says only 4 per cent of children with disabilities in Bangladesh attend school.\u003cbr/\u003eLooking at the wider picture is even more worrying.\u003cbr/\u003eCraft says that 77 million children around the world are not in education because of their disabilities.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Bangladesh, the CCD trains teachers on how to integrate children with disabilities into the classroom.\u003cbr/\u003eOne school that has benefited from this programme is Noapara Swankarpasa High School.\u003cbr/\u003eToday it has 15 children with disabilities attending classes.\u003cbr/\u003eSomeone else to have gained from the CCD's education projects is Munmun Mohonaj Chowdhury.\u003cbr/\u003eToday, she works as a sign language interpreter.\u003cbr/\u003eHer father, M I Chowdhury, who is also deaf, says educating rural communities about disabilities is important.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Asia Pacific Disability Forum (APDF) was held in the Bangladeshi capital from February 27 to 29, 2008.\u003cbr/\u003eHeld annually, it gathers politicians and academics from across the globe.\u003cbr/\u003eThe APDF is a regional NGO network established in 2002, with the aim of eliminating the barriers that prevent disabled people from leading a
