And the other thing they have is white thorns, and these thorns reflect the heat of the sunlight."
This small creature is the tok-tokkie beetle.
It too has learned to live in extreme climates.
Endjala explains: "When it's cool or cold it's black. And when it's hot like the sun, it releases this waxy layer - a white layer that covers its body. And we all know white reflects the sunlight."
At last they reach the Namib Desert Environmental Education Trust known at the Nadeet.
The centre uses the way creatures of Namib have evolved as a model for contemporary living.
It believes human beings can adopt the same sort of techniques to adapt to the globally changing climate.
Fossil fuel emissions, deforestation and methane emissions has already changed our environment creating more extreme weather patterns around the world.
According to the centre, we humans face a stark choice.
It says we humans can choose to change now and prepare for the future, or we may be forced to change.
These members of the Klein Aub community are among the over 5000 Namibians to have participated in the Nadeet sustainable living course since 2003.
It takes for a sympol the oryx which has evolved to survive in it's harsh landscape.
It's excrement is particularly dry, and it's urine is concentrated to help it conserve moisture.
The Nadeet centre teaches the importance of water conservation.
The centre's director Viktoria Keding explains: "We're a very dry country, water's very scarce, there's very little of it. If we count, then we start to know and become aware of just how much water we actually use versus how much water we actually need."
One of the ways water is saved is by not using a conventional toilet, which uses 10 to 14 litres of water per flush.
Instead water-less toilets are used and human waste re-used for compost.
Turning the country's plentiful sunlight into an asset, water is heated by the sun for washing.
Solar power is also used to generate all Nadeet's electricity needs, as well as for cooking.
This is done using parabolic solar cookers like these.
Using the sun's energy means it is an effective and renewable cooking source with no polluting by product.
Significantly it also means that scarce trees are not cut down for firewood, which in turn releases climate-changing carbon dioxide.
It is an inspiration for community member Frans Strauss.
He says: "I'm keen to take this design home with me, and to open a restaurant that prepares food solely from sun power."
The solar oven concentrates the sun's heat to cook food from a free and renewable source.
The solar food tastes good too according to community member Ida Boois.
She says: "I've seen something new today. What I've learnt is that we can use the sun's energy to cook food such as bread. It's tastes good too."
Taking inspiration from the dung beetle, which recycles dung by laying its eggs in it, and using it as a food source, nadeet encourages recycling.
The majority of waste generated can be used to make compost, while glass, tin, plastic and metal can all be recycled.
Old newspapers are soaked in water mixed with sawdust before being left to dry.
These make great fire-making material and an environmentally-friendly alternative to wood, which is a finite resource.
Even the stove you cook on can make a difference according to technical director Andreas Keding.
He says: "What we'll take is an old 20 litre paint drum that people will throw out, and you can take it and we'll make a fuel-efficient stove out of it."
This old fashioned pot heating on a woodpile takes much longer than the hob created from the tin.
Riowane Lee-Heindro Cortze and his community friends learn that this is another way to save finite resources.
He says: "To boil water quickest is good, and it means you can save on wood."
The Namib Desert is a place of extraordinary beauty, but it also teaches us how to adapt and change our behaviour so that we can conserve all life on the planet.
This desert landscape has taken 80 million years to evolve, but if climate change forecasters are correct, we will not have so much time to change the way we live.
The survival of communities such as this one in Namibia may depend upon learning the lessons of how to live by using scarce resources efficiently.
Rand Nature Reserve, Namibia, August 27-30, 2012
1.
