The music of Leonard Bernstein powers the performance on stage, the men clad in American sailor outfits and the women in Broadway blouses and swirl skirts.\u003cbr/\u003eBut this is Russia.  For the first time since the Cold War the American Ballet Theatre is back on stage at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow.\u003cbr/\u003eIt was 45 years ago that the company last visited.  Relations soured for decades after the defection of the Bolshoi's star dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov, who went on to become the star turn for the U.S. company.\u003cbr/\u003eThere is so much history and so much crossover in the ballet that it can be a bit daunting says U.S. dancer Maria Riccetto: \u003cbr/\u003e\"Everything that we do is for the audience, no matter where it's from.  So, it's a little bit intimidating, but at the same time it's exciting.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBaryshnikov was principal dancer and then, in the 1980s, Artistic Director for American Ballet Theatre (ABT).  That must have hurt the Bolshoi.\u003cbr/\u003eNow the thaw is complete and ABT opened a three-night run on the new stage of the Bolshoi, the company Baryshnikov led when he defected from the Soviet Union in 1974 while on tour in Canada.\u003cbr/\u003eFor American Ballet Theatre dancer Sasha Radetsky following in the footsteps of one of the great names in ballet history is a dream come true.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's a great honour, it's absolutely an honour. It is due to reopen later this year (2011). \u003cbr/\u003eBesides \"Fancy Free,\" a Broadway musical-like ballet choreographed by Jerome Robbins to music by Leonard Bernstein, the ABT programme includes two even more modern pieces, as well as classic choreography.\u003cbr/\u003eFor principal dancer Marcelo Gomez, it's the rich melting pot of American culture that makes the ABT range so distinctive.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I think that ABT (American Ballet Theatre) is known for its many different schools, it's many different dancers and I think that we build our own technique, I think we build our own company. The low ticket prices in Moscow have historically make access to the best ballet widely available and widely appreciated.\u003cbr/\u003eABT Artistic Director Kevin McKenzie says the dancers feel the pressure of performing in a country with such a rich ballet tradition.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I think that there is a certain amount of, a mixture of nervousness and of pride, and of anxiety, and wanting it to go really well.  Because I think that the performers are all very aware that this is an audience who knows what they are looking at.  They are very knowledgeable in ballet and have opinions.  So yes, they are on edge,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eThe ABT programme is part of the 2nd International Mstislav Rostropovich Festival and includes the world premiere of \"Troika,\" dedicated to the Russian cellist and conductor who died in 2007.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Troika\" is choreographed by Benjamin Millepied, who was responsible for the ballet scenes in the movie \"Black Swan\" starring his partner Natalie Portman, who is expecting their child.  She won an Oscar for her performance in the role of the obsessive ballerina.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the evening begins with \"Theme and Variations,\" a classic George Balanchine ballet with music by Tchaikovsky that harks back to the Imperial Russian ballet of the 19th century. \u003cbr/\u003eIt turns the full circle of ABT's relations with the Bolshoi.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is the ballet that was performed by ABT during its first appearance in Moscow in 1960 and again when it returned in 1966.\u003cbr/\u003eThankfully for the new generation of ABT dancers, first night responses to the return of the U.S. Company are good. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Classical elements are used in a very innovative way, very unexpected.
