Police officer observing protest\u003cbr/\u003eAbout a hundred Burmese and foreign protesters gathered at a Thai border town to Myanmar, Mae-Sot, on Sunday, demanding the release of the pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi. \u003cbr/\u003eProtesters marched on a street near Thailand-Myanmar bridge, shouting slogans across the river toward the direction of Myanmar. \u003cbr/\u003eProtesters included former political prisoners and Burmese and foreign student activists. \u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile approximately 40 Burmese exiles staged a protest outside the Chinese embassy in Bangkok calling on the Chinese government to act against Myanmar's leaders.\u003cbr/\u003eChina, which borders Myanmar, has close ties with the military junta and consistently refuses to support sanctions against it. \u003cbr/\u003eOn Friday, Aung San Suu Kyi pleaded not guilty to charges she violated terms of her house arrest, as indications mounted she would be imprisoned for sheltering an uninvited American visitor.\u003cbr/\u003eHer plea came after the special court trying her agreed to accept the charges and proceed with her trial, which could lead to her being sentenced to five years in prison.\u003cbr/\u003eThe court's action followed comments by the military regime's foreign minister claiming that the foreign intruder was part of an anti-government plot.  Roadblocks near Suu Kyi's home have been removed, suggesting she may not be returning any time soon.\u003cbr/\u003eMyanmar's courts operate under the influence of the ruling military, and almost always deal harshly with political dissidents.\u003cbr/\u003eInternational criticism of the case against Suu Kyi has been strong.\u003cbr/\u003eThe UN Security Council called Friday for the release of all political prisoners in Myanmar, including Suu Kyi, and expressed concern at the \"political impact\" of the pro-democracy leader's current trial.\u003cbr/\u003eThe ruling junta has stood firm for two decades against international pressure to reach an accommodation with the country's pro-democracy movement. Human rights groups estimate it holds more than 2,100 political prisoners.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter testimony had finished for the day at the trial in Insein prison, presiding judge Thaung Nyunt declared the court accepted the charge that Suu Kyi, 63, had violated the terms of her house arrest, according to her lawyer, Nyan Win. \u003cbr/\u003eShe has been in detention without trial for more than 13 of the past 19 years, including the last six. When the judge asked her, \"Are you guilty?\" she replied \"I am not guilty.\" Asked why, she said \"I am not guilty because I have not broken any law.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe two female companions who stay with Suu Kyi, and the American, John W. Yettaw, whose intrusion into her lakeside home triggered the case, also pleaded not guilty to the same charge.\u003cbr/\u003eTheir trial began last Monday, and will continue after the
