a record sale for a short story manuscript.\u003cbr/\u003eAnother Hemingway manuscript, \"The Light of the World\", sold for 110-thousand U-S dollars.\u003cbr/\u003eThe literary treasures, including manuscripts of two important Hemingway short stories, had been stored since the 1940s in an old steamer trunk that belonged to an old girlfriend, Jane Kendall Mason.\u003cbr/\u003eThey offer a new insight into a relationship between Mason and Ernest Hemingway that blossomed during the decadent days of 1930s Havana.\u003cbr/\u003eThe most remarkable find was a stack of 101 closely written pages in Hemingway's bold, hurried handwriting. \u003cbr/\u003eThe manuscript, with numerous revisions and amendments, is the author's first draft of \"The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber\". \u003cbr/\u003eUnder ultraviolet light, the pencil indentations at the top of the page reveal that Hemingway's story originally bore the title \"A Comedy With Animals\".\u003cbr/\u003eChristies' manuscript specialist said the manuscripts reveal the author's first thoughts, his second thoughts and the words he decided to change.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"It is a record I believe for the 20th century short story manuscript, certainly a record for Ernest Hemingway.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Chris Coover, Christies' manuscript specialist\u003cbr/\u003eAlso in the sale was a 40-page autographed draft manuscript of Hemingway's enigmatic story \"The Light of the World\", from 1933. \u003cbr/\u003eThe story's unnamed protagonist, a young man, is generally identified as Nick Adams, whose fictional life is recorded in twelve of Hemingway's stories.\u003cbr/\u003eIt closely parallels Hemingway's own youth in the Michigan woods and his searing experiences as an ambulance driver in Italy during World War One.\u003cbr/\u003eA 40-page typed and handwritten manuscript of Hemingway's journalistic \"Marlin Off Cuba\", a homage to the deep sea game fish, and a contribution to the first issue of Esquire magazine was included in the sale.\u003cbr/\u003eThere was also a draft of Hemingway's introduction to the memoirs of celebrated Paris model Kiki, the \"Queen\" of Montparnasse.\u003cbr/\u003eCoover said what makes the manuscript for \"The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber\" special is the lady it was given to.\u003cbr/\u003eJane Mason was the model for the character Margo Macomber, who shoots her husband perhaps by accident, perhaps on purpose.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Coover, Hemingway characteristically left the ending  ambiguous.\u003cbr/\u003eHe also sent the manuscript to the lady who had been the model for the main character.\u003cbr/\u003eMason, the adopted daughter of Maryland multimillionaire Lyman Kendall, and her husband, the wealthy Grant Mason, head of Pan American Airways in Cuba, became close friends with Hemingway and his second wife, Pauline. \u003cbr/\u003eThey partied in Havana and Key West, fished from Hemingway's boat, sometimes with their partners but more often without. \u003cbr/\u003eElaine Mason, the granddaughter of Jane Mason, was enamoured with her grandmother's affair with Hemingway. \u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"When she found out my birthday was in July, she said my husband Ernest's birthday was in July, which was a big laugh for all of us.
