increasing.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is expected to overtake China as the world's most populated nation by 2045 \u003cbr/\u003eHigh property prices and a constant influx of migrants means many people in the Indian capital New Delhi live in slums and shanty towns, with few or no amenities.\u003cbr/\u003eBut as the country's population continues to increase the city's problems look set to get worse.\u003cbr/\u003eIf it continues growing as it has done over the past few decades, India's population is expected to reach 1.4 (b) billion by 2025 and 1.6 (b)billion by 2050, according to the United Nations.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is expected to overtake China as the world's most populated nation by 2045, when the UN estimates the population will be 1.501(b) billion and China's will be 1.496 (b)billion.\u003cbr/\u003eFor the country's capital city New Delhi the statistics hold a special significance.\u003cbr/\u003eNew Delhi is already the sixth most populated metropolis in the world, with an estimated population of nearly 14 (m)million. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the 2001 census, there was an influx of over 2.2 (m) million people into New Delhi during 1991-2001, a decade during which the city saw its population grow by 47 %.\u003cbr/\u003eNew data shows that it is now the new urban magnet for tens of thousands of rural migrants who dream of better lives and opportunities in the city.\u003cbr/\u003eSeelampur in eastern New Delhi is a sprawling shanty town inhabited mostly by the city's migrant population.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is a perfect illustration of New Delhi's dual character - a gleaming metro station right next to a crowded tenement with no access to basic amenities.\u003cbr/\u003eThe crammed semi-permanent housing structures are home to thousands of migrants - many of whom live in a single room with their families.\u003cbr/\u003eExpensive real estate and a lack of affordable rental housing pushes the new migrants towards these neighbourhoods.\u003cbr/\u003eA recent report released by United Nations Development Fund (UNDP) says more than 6-hundred people are migrating to the Indian capital every day.\u003cbr/\u003eMost of them come from neighbouring states of Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal and Bihar.\u003cbr/\u003eProfessor Gulati from the Indian Association of Study of Population explains how the city of New Delhi has grown.\u003cbr/\u003eThe reasons for the growth are obvious - the city has a high per capita income and a low poverty rate compared to the national average.\u003cbr/\u003eMany migrants are absorbed by the city's informal market for construction workers, domestic servants and street shop owners.\u003cbr/\u003eWhat this high migration rate means for the city's already strained infrastructure is there for all to see.\u003cbr/\u003eShaheeda Khatoon came to New Delhi from her native Bihar state more than 20 years ago.\u003cbr/\u003eShe and her five children live in a small room situated along an open drain in Seelampur, selling tobacco from a makeshift outlet right outside her house.\u003cbr/\u003eWith no access to a toilet or washing space, most of her household chores are done within the walls of her home.\u003cbr/\u003eShaheeda earns enough to feed her children and even sends two of them to a nearby government school.\u003cbr/\u003eBut, she says,  life is Seelampur is far from perfect.\u003cbr/\u003eThe UNDP report, quoting the housing census of 2001, says that 38 percent of households lived in one-room housing units, and around 25 per cent had no access to piped water supply.\u003cbr/\u003eDespite New Delhi getting the highest water supply in the country, there is an acute water crisis, which the report says is due to distributional inequity. \u003cbr/\u003eAreas like Seelampur depend on water tankers arranged by the municipal authorities for their supply of drinking water.\u003cbr/\u003eResident Nadira says she does not like living in the area. \u003cbr/\u003eCensus figures show that the number of houses without toilets jumped from 1.18 (m)million in 1991 to nearly 2.9 (m)million a decade later, as the city rapidly expanded.\u003cbr/\u003eAn absence of adequate solid waste management and sanitation facilities has made the entire area a breeding ground for disease.\u003cbr/\u003eWater, electricity supply and drainage remain the most wanted amenities for most low-income neighbourhoods in the city.\u003cbr/\u003eGulati says effective planning for New Delhi's future needs is required for meeting the ever-growing demand for infrastructure and basic services.     \u003cbr/\u003eAs the city gears up to host the Commonwealth Games in 2010, its residents are hoping for a major expansion in civic facilities.\u003cbr/\u003eFor a country that is home to about 16% of the global population and adds the equivalent of the population of Australia every year to its numbers, planning for its cities is a major task.\u003cbr/\u003eIndia's prime minister has announced an ambitious plan to spend US$23 (b)billion to provide basic services to the country's exploding urban populations.\u003cbr/\u003eThe plan is scheduled to cover about 60 cities which have over a (m)million residents, state capitals, cities considered important for religious and historic reasons, and tourist
