The canopy is looking very poor, normally its much lusher than that.  You can see the flag shoots there are affected by mildew, you can see it on the side of the shoot there and the slightly curling up leaves which isn't good news. But being organic sometimes we can't fight against everything if the conditions are not right and I think this is going to be one of those years where we'll just have to open a bottle of last year's vintage and remember what its like. \"\u003cbr/\u003eWiltshire - July 2007 \u003cbr/\u003e14. If you then look here, you can see that this is a bunch that has finished flowering and they're just starting to swell.  You can see a slight change in the size and that's because pollination has been successful and the grape is now starting to grow. \u003cbr/\u003e17. It happened in '95 and '96, we've had seven or eight years past when we had very good flowering.  So you've just got to accept it perhaps, one or two years in every ten that we will get poor periods of weather at times which are critical to the wine growing period. increased average temperatures.  \u003cbr/\u003eThis year however, with a record wet summer affecting grape pollination and increasing disease,  many vineyards have been hit hard with some predicting a 50 percent downturn in yield.  \u003cbr/\u003eDespite this set back English wine producers remain optimistic for the future of English wine with some suggesting that this year's lower yield will lead to a better quality product.\u003cbr/\u003eEnglish wine production has been on an upward trend, both in quantity and quality for the past ten years. \u003cbr/\u003eThis improvement has been largely attributed to the increase in average temperatures because of climate change.\u003cbr/\u003eBut after experiencing a bumper crop last year, this summer has been one of the wettest on record and the dampness has taken its toll on the vines with some vineyards experiencing failed pollination and fungal disease.  \u003cbr/\u003eGeoff Bowen, owner of the Pebblebed vineyard in Devon, one of the wettest counties of England, has been hit particularly hard and expects his yield to be down by about fifty percent from last year.\u003cbr/\u003eHe attributes the poor crop to the rain and lower temperatures.\u003cbr/\u003eOne good thing that may come out of the reduction in the yield could be better quality wine.\u003cbr/\u003eLocation of a vineyard is of prime importance. \u003cbr/\u003eWine farmer Paul Langham from the a' Beckett vineyard in Wiltshire has been luckier than others with the wet weather,  because his farm lies in a rain shadow and so has not been as hard hit.  \u003cbr/\u003eHowever because it has been so wet this year even the lucky ones have been affected.\u003cbr/\u003eLangham explains that the rain is a problem as it washes off the pollen and the grape flowers then fail to get pollinated. \u003cbr/\u003eHe adds that he believes this year is a bit of an anomaly and that England will continues to produce world class, award winning wines as an industry.  \u003cbr/\u003eGeoff Bowen believes the damage is nature of agriculture and that every now and then you have a bad year.\u003cbr/\u003eBut climate statistics paint an improving picture for English wine growers with expected increases in  temperatures that would firmly place England on the wine production map. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to figures from the marketing Association of the English Wine Industry, 'Englishwineproducers' in 2005 there were 362 vineyards in the UK. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Wine Standards Branch of the Food Standards Agency reports that the 2006 production figures for English and Welsh wines was one of their highest volumes on record.\u003cbr/\u003e3,369,000 million bottles will be produced from the 2006 harvest, the third highest volume since production
