Close of baby\u003cbr/\u003eThe circumcision of newborn males is a traditional rite of passage for Jewish boys.\u003cbr/\u003eBut a row is brewing in San francisco over attempts to ban the practice, with a proposal to outlaw it being put forward in forthcoming elections.\u003cbr/\u003eOpponents say the circumcision rite is genital mutilation inflicted on a child without consent and want to make it a criminal offence.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's an everyday part of the Jewish tradition - a rite of passage for baby boys.\u003cbr/\u003eBut opponents of the circumcision ritual in San Francisco want to see practice banned.\u003cbr/\u003eThey say it is a cruel and unnecessary punishment of a child who has no choice in the matter, calling it genital mutilation and child abuse.\u003cbr/\u003eAt this Jewish circumcision ceremony, family and friends gather to celebrate the occasion.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is a tradition in the Jewish faith to circumcise all male babies when they are eight days old and the supporters of circumcision say that the commandment to do this can be traced back to the Bible, in the Book of Genesis. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is called a 'brit' or 'bris', the Hebrew word for pact or covenant. \u003cbr/\u003eRabbi Gil Leeds of Berkeley, California is a certified \"mohel,\" a person who traditionally performs ritual circumcisions in the Jewish faith.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says most Jewish people have their sons circumcised.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's done with joy. It's done happily. It's done with the most tremendous zest. It's always been that way and even under difficult times, in times of persecution in history, Jews have always kept strong to this commandment, to this mitzvah, to this tradition.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBut opponents of circumcision have orchestrated a campaign seeking to ban the circumcision of male children in San Francisco.\u003cbr/\u003eThe group has succeeded in getting their measure on to the November ballot, meaning voters will be asked to pass judgement on what until now has been a private family matter.\u003cbr/\u003eIf the measure passes, circumcision would be prohibited for males under the age of 18. \u003cbr/\u003eThe practice would become a misdemeanour offence punishable by a fine of up to one thousand US dollars or up to one year in jail and there would be no religious exemptions to the ban.\u003cbr/\u003eThe initiative appears to be the first of its kind in the country to progress so far, though a larger national debate over the health benefits of circumcision has been going on for many years. \u003cbr/\u003eSupporters of the ban say male circumcision is a form of genital mutilation that is unnecessary, extremely painful and even dangerous. They say parents should not be able to force the decision on their young child.\u003cbr/\u003eLloyd Schofield is a lead spokesman for getting the ban into law.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says the cutting away of the foreskin from the penis is a more invasive medical procedure than many new parents or childless individuals realise.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's painful.
