They would bomb their targets and then they would try to return and some of them ran into bad weather or operational problems or they were fired at by enemy fire and they were damaged and had to do force landings on Kamchatka.\\\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION:  Retired Navy Captain James Connell, Chief of Defense Department POW/Missing Personnel/U.S. Russia Joint Commission Office at American Embassy Moscow\u003cbr/\u003eThe bomber could also have been low on fuel- it is estimated it was about 6 hours into its mission.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Soviet Union was not at war with Japan at the time, but U-S bomber crews used the strip for emergency landings rather than ditch at sea, knowing they would be arrested and the planes impounded.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the cause of the crash will probably remain a mystery because the accident was too long ago to justify an investigation.\u003cbr/\u003eExperts say there were 5-7 people on board the bomber, and it is likely they all died on impact.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\\\"The moment which was most emotional for me was when he went back and pulled up the vertical stabilizer into the vertical position and there was written Navy BV 1 , the squadron number and the number of the plane.
