about the chemical traits of plants and roots is often used in conjunction with modern medicine. \u003cbr/\u003eBut some fear this knowledge is being lost from generation to generation. \u003cbr/\u003eSome Peruvians have been working to safeguard traditional medicine as a cultural heritage and a valuable national resource. \u003cbr/\u003eThe work done by these experts in traditional medicine has won official recognition. \u003cbr/\u003eUnder Peru's Health Ministry, the Institute of Traditional Medicine, opened its doors in the early 90's in the country's largest Amazonian city of Iquitos. \u003cbr/\u003eThe institute concentrates on the cultivation and study of medicinal plants, all part of the biological wealth of the Peruvian Amazon jungle.\u003cbr/\u003eLocal and foreign investors have also developed an interest in uncovering new healing substances to manufacture and market them. \u003cbr/\u003eTraditional Peruvian medicine gave the world quinine, which saved Europe from malaria in the mid 17th century. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to historians, this substance was probably discovered by Peruvian Jesuits, who introduced to the world this white powder obtained from
