Close up of ear buds\u003cbr/\u003eAs sales of digital music players continue to soar, new research suggests that prolonged listening to loud music on the ear buds frequently used with the devices may cause hearing difficulties. \u003cbr/\u003eResearchers at Northwestern University in the US state of Illinois warn that ear buds - the small earphones worn inside the ear - are more dangerous than earmuff-style listening devices because they are worn further down the ear canal. \u003cbr/\u003eThe also conclude that people tend to crank up the volume more when they use ear buds because the devices don't drown out surrounding noises as well as earmuffs.\u003cbr/\u003eA quick survey of New Yorkers using the ear buds with mp3 players indicated that most people are aware of the hazards and don't listen to music too loudly through their earphones.\u003cbr/\u003eDr. Jeffrey Kim from the University of Georgetown in Washington DC said that people in their 20s and 30s are potentially prone to the most damage because they tend to listen to the loudest types of music and \"pump up the volume\".\u003cbr/\u003ePeople out on California's Venice Beach said levels should be lowered.\u003cbr/\u003ePotential risks are not simply limited to MP3 players, the most popular of which is Apple's iPod range. \u003cbr/\u003eAudiologists have warned against the potential dangers of
