Mostly for government buildings,\" said Jorge Alvarez, Director of Cuba's Centre for Environmental Control and Inspection.\u003cbr/\u003e63-year-old retiree Felix Rodriguez has lived near the beach for the last three decades, but will have to pack up and move. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The sea keeps getting closer and closer,\" Rodriguez said. \"Before it used to be 30 meters (33 yards) further away.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe government is relocating Rodriguez and 11 other families to homes farther inland. \u003cbr/\u003eCuban scientists who studied the effects of climate change on the island forecast that rising sea levels would seriously damage or wipe 122 Cuban towns off the map. \u003cbr/\u003eThe report predicted sea levels would rise nearly three feet (one metre) by century's end in Cuba.\u003cbr/\u003eIn addition to that, the impact of climate change is worsened by coastal development, threatening sand dunes and mangrove swamps that provide the best natural protection against rising seas.\u003cbr/\u003eCrews across the island are working to demolish thousands of structures to restore much of the coast to something approaching its natural state.\u003cbr/\u003eDemolitions have so far been limited to vacation rentals, hotel annexes, social clubs, military installations and other public buildings rather than private homes.\u003cbr/\u003eAlvarez said that some 10,000 sanctions and fines have also been handed down for illegal development. \u003cbr/\u003eSome 900 coastal structures have been contributing to an average of 6.6 feet (1.2 metres) of annual coastline erosion, according to Geologist Adan Zuniga of Cuba's Centre for Coastal Ecosystems Research, a government body. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The coastline worldwide is suffering an accelerated rate of erosion mostly because of the rise in sea levels,\" Zuniga said. \u003cbr/\u003e\"In many places the beach is receding more than five metres (yards) per year. needs of families living in endangered homes and a 2.5 (b) billion US dollar-a-year tourism industry that is its number one source of foreign
