After dancing hand in hand with choreographer Debbie Allen at the Oscars and performing at the World Athletic Championships in Seville, Cortes is back on stage with 'Soul'.\u003cbr/\u003e'Soul' originally debuted in October 1999 in Barcelona, with costumes designed by GIORGIO ARMANI and music by JESUS BOLA and DIEGO CARRASCO.  In addition to the \"jondas\", the most pure version of flamenco, Cortes has woven in soul, gospel and classic songs from Cuba into the show.  'Soul' includes live music that combines Mozart to 1930s Chicago - all without losing the essential heart of where Cortes' flamenco roots.\u003cbr/\u003e'Soul' captures the appeal of the tangos and the spirit of old Havana, from the symphonic to the soulful, and once again, the souls of gypsy and black music collide. \u003cbr/\u003eCortes is no stranger to mixing different styles of dance.  As an artist, he has always been confident about who he is and where he comes from - and with that in mind, he never loses the essence of flamenco.  He is a mix of classical and modern, pure and mixed styles, from Andalucia, Cordoba, or New York.  Cortes' grandfather was an old gypsy, a herdsman who was a profound influence on the young Joaquin.  \u003cbr/\u003eCortes says he's proud of his roots, and, according to his PR company, is mad about egg and chips.\u003cbr/\u003eWith his charisma, strength, artistry and personality, Cortes is introducing a new generation to flamenco. \u003cbr/\u003eOf gypsy blood, he was born in Cordoba in 1969 and at the age of twelve, moved to Madrid where he began his dance training.  He joined the Spanish National Ballet when he was fifteen and quickly rose to the ranks of solo artist.  Joaquín toured all over the world with this company, performing in the Metropolitan Opera House in New York and the Kremlin´s Congress Palace in Moscow. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter leaving the National Ballet, he took part in a number of gala performances alongside such great figures as Maya Plisetskaya, Sylvie Guillem, Pere Schauffus, Marie-Claude Pietragalla and Julio Bocca and collaborated in several different companies and shows as guest artist or choreographer.  These works include the choreography for Carmen at the Arena in Verona, his participation in the Summer Flamenco Festival of Tokyo, in various performances at the New York Lincoln Center, his participation in the classical \"Don Quijote\" with the Caracas Ballet. \u003cbr/\u003eCortes' career as an independent artist started in 1990.  In performance, he began to mix Spanish and contemporary dance styles. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter performing at the Champs-Elysée Theatre in Paris in 1992, he created his own company, the Joaquín Cortés Flamenco Ballet.  His first show, Cibayí, toured throughout Spain and travelled to Japan, France, Italy, Venezuela and The United States. \u003cbr/\u003ePedro Almodóvar cast him in his first film role in 'La Flor de mi Secreto' (The Flower of my Secret), in 1995.  In the movie, he performed his own choreography to Miles Davis \"Sketches of Spain\" which, in 1960, was the first attempt at combining jazz and flamenco.\u003cbr/\u003eLater, Joaquín repeated the experience in Carlos Saura's 'Flamenco', in which he shared the screen with Spain's top flamenco artists. \u003cbr/\u003eHis second creation, Pasión Gitana (Gypsy Passion), opened in 1995, with the participation of Giorgio Armani, who designed the costumes.  The show has run all over Spain, showing in bull rings, and has also been a success in Europe. \u003cbr/\u003eIn 1996, Cortes did his first tour of USA where he performed in the Radio City Music Hall in New York (he was the first Spanish dancer to perform there with his own show), and in the Universal Amphitheater of Los Angeles. \u003cbr/\u003eIn 1997 Joaquín launched a CD with his own band, the Gypsy Passion Band, on which he composes and directs the music and collaborates on percussion.  The CD contains music from the show as well as new arrangements. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter creating new choreographies for Pasión Gitana in 1997, the show continued touring Latin America and was a huge hit at the Sydney Festival, and in Tokyo, Canada and New York. \u003cbr/\u003eCortes has also starred in 'Flamenco' (1995) and will be seen in the upcoming 'Gitano', opposite French beauty Laetitia Casta.\u003cbr/\u003eThe dancer's fans include Sting, Eric CLapton, Mira Sorvino and Emma Thompson.
