TV crews in front of the court house\u003cbr/\u003eIn a key test of Serbia's ability to deal with its legacy of wartime atrocities, a landmark trial opened on Tuesday for six Serbs indicted for executing 192 rival Croats at a pig farm in Croatia in 1991 and dumping their bodies into a pit.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the time of the alleged crime, the suspects were members of a paramilitary Serb group fighting in Vukovar against Croatian forces.\u003cbr/\u003eThe indictment against them says that after the Serb side gained control of Vukovar in mid-November 1991, Croatian prisoners who had \"surrendered\" were bused from a Vukovar hospital to a nearby pig farm on November 20, 1991, where they were first hoarded into hangars.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the Ovcara pig farm, the six defendants allegedly lined up the victims, strafed them with machine-gun fire and dumped their bodies into a freshly dug pit. \u003cbr/\u003eExhumations in later years revealed the scope of the massacre, which came to symbolise the brutality of the war in Croatia.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter the charges were read out in court on Tuesday - including the names of all 192 victims - the chief defendant, Miroljub Vujovic, a Vukovar native who allegedly commanded the Serb paramilitary group, proclaimed his innocence, saying the indictment was \"a complete fabrication\".\u003cbr/\u003eA self-described \"volunteer defender\" of Vukovar, Vujovic said he only heard later from others that \"something had happened in Ovcara\".\u003cbr/\u003eBut he admitted he visited Ovcara \"out of curiosity\" a day before the alleged massacre, looking for his former Croat acquaintances among the\u003cbr/\u003eprisoners. \u003cbr/\u003eThree ranking officers of the former Yugoslav army, who allegedly ordered or allowed the executions, are being tried at The Hague tribunal, which has allowed Serbia to prosecute the six lower-level suspects.\u003cbr/\u003eEight people originally were indicted in connection with the Vukovar killings; one committed suicide while in detention, and another went into a\u003cbr/\u003ewitness-protection programme in exchange for testifying against the others.\u003cbr/\u003eThe defendants face up to 20 years in jail if convicted.\u003cbr/\u003eThe case, dealing with one of the worst Balkan massacres at the start of Yugoslavia's violent breakup, comes amid a resurgence of nationalist\u003cbr/\u003esentiment in a republic now run by a prime minister who opposes the UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague, Netherlands.\u003cbr/\u003eBelgrade's Special Court was recently established in conjunction with the tribunal to handle lower-profile cases.\u003cbr/\u003eSerb officials said the trial would show \"the ability of our courts to handle war crimes cases, which is important for further transfers of cases from The Hague\".\u003cbr/\u003eSerbia's judiciary hopes that if the trial is conducted according to international standards, it will be able to try more cases at home rather\u003cbr/\u003ethan in The Hague, which it sees as biased against Serbs.\u003cbr/\u003eSam G. Nazzaro, a legal advisor from the US embassy in Belgrade, was among several Western observers at the trial. \u003cbr/\u003eHe said the prosecutors and the investigators had \"worked diligently and conscientiously in this case\", adding he hoped that \"justice will be done\".\u003cbr/\u003eSerbia is still struggling to deal with the gruesome legacy of war campaigns and atrocities committed during the 1990s under former President\u003cbr/\u003eSlobodan Milosevic, himself on trial for war crimes before the UN tribunal.\u003cbr/\u003eIn 1991, Milosevic supported Croatia's ethnic Serbs, who
