Massacres have become almost the events of normal reporting. The gruesome details of ever-higher death tolls are having less impact as they become more common. But what of the children?  The horror of numbers of villagers\u003cbr/\u003eslain and the sickening methods used to massacre and maim tend to obscure the effects of the carnage on the nation's youngsters. They are suffering very badly.\u003cbr/\u003eScript:\u003cbr/\u003eWhile its children try to play like any others, Algeria is writing its history -- and their future -- with blood. The people will not talk about what is being done to them. They fear being caught up and killed themselves in the murderous mayhem between Islamic fundamentalists deprived of a democratic election victory and drastic reprisals by the desperate forces of the state. But if it is hard for the adult population to communicate, how much more difficult it is for children.\u003cbr/\u003eThey don't understand what is happening and have no idea why. Yet they are in the frontline of suffering.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen the madness of destruction strikes, no one is safe. The slaughter engulfs entire regions. Factories, schools and hospitals are destroyed.\u003cbr/\u003eThousands of children have been killed. Many more have been damaged beyond physical, mental or emotional repair. Little ones have witnessed the butchery that took away their parents. Many youngsters have been raped. Parents tell of kissing their boys and girls goodbye in the\u003cbr/\u003emorning and never seeing them again, while the children give terrible accounts of watching the lifeblood ebb away from their fathers and mothers.\u003cbr/\u003eAlgerians are very proud of the national scout movement and the children still join. But many of them are too scared to get through the hours without tears and trauma. Some fear making friendships...in case they have to see their friends buried. Centres where children can be treated by psychologists have been set up. The work to try to erase or at least dull the horrific memories imprinted on these children's minds is painstaking and progress is slow.\u003cbr/\u003eThe terrible physical injuries many youngsters have suffered are constant reminders of their ordeal.
