Kumaraswamy Vinodhan, part of Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga's inner circle, was a minority Tamil, a well-known Colombo lawyer, and the head of the Tamil service of the government-run Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation. He was assassinated at point-blank range by a man said to have links with the Tamil Tigers. Police said two gunmen on a motorcycle had killed Vinodhan at his residence. Vinodhan's killing is one of a series of violent incidents that has rocked the country since the Tigers withdrew from a truce with the government on April 19. Meanwhile, in Kurunegala, a wake was held for the Sri Lankan Air Force's top official, Wing Commander Roger Weerasinghe, who was among 47 dead in the first-ever downing of an air force plane by Tamil Tigers. On Saturday (29/4), a second Sri Lankan air force Avro transporter was shot down as it made its descent on Palaly, killing all 97 on board.
