Turan...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eVillagers in a Turkish village famed for its use of bird language have cancelled their annual festival to honour the people of Gaza. \u003cbr/\u003eBird language has been spoken in the remote mountains of Turkey's Black Sea area for centuries. \u003cbr/\u003eTuran Kocek is communicating with his neighbour Cemil using \"Kus Dili\" - the Turkish name for bird language.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to locals, this whistling language originated in the area due to its very steep mountains, which makes it difficult to visit neighbours and friends.\u003cbr/\u003eTurkish sentences are translated into whistles which help the villagers communicate, but the vocabulary is not wide. \u003cbr/\u003eThe most common sentences are related to greetings, calls for help for harvesting and labouring and announcing weddings and funerals.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Cemil, Cemil! Come here very quickly!\", whistles Kocek from his wooden and stone house in Kuskoy mountain. \"Ok!\" replies Cemil.\u003cbr/\u003eAbout 600 people live in Kuskoy and the surrounding mountains - a conservative area of pious Muslims.\u003cbr/\u003eVillagers make a living from hazelnut and tea farms and selling vegetables. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the profit is so low that the youngsters migrate to big towns in Turkey and come back in summer to enjoy their holidays at home.\u003cbr/\u003eThe bird language festival has taken place in the village every summer for the past 15 years.  People from all around gather for folk song and dance before a competition to find the year's best whistler.  Last year some 2000 people attended. \u003cbr/\u003eIt was scheduled this year for 3 August, but the villagers say they didn't feel in the mood to celebrate - amid the Gaza war. \u003cbr/\u003e\"People in Kuskoy are sad because of the war in Gaza,\" says retired villager, Bayram Cakir. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The Kuskoy community are feeling the pain there (in Gaza) as if were their own. So they feel they're going through this war themselves. They want it to end as soon as possible, but can't do anything about it but pray.\" \u003cbr/\u003eThe festival is usually held in the town's only primary school.\u003cbr/\u003eThe organisers are considering moving the event to October.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It would have been nice if it (the festival) hadn't been cancelled, but they're our brothers and sisters, too. The people who live there (in Gaza) are our brothers and sisters. At least in terms of religion they're our brothers and sisters. So their pain is our pain,\" says Sefer Kocek, a local journalist and Head of the Bird Language Association.\u003cbr/\u003eThe goal of the festival is to give visibility to the very rare whistling language used in the area.\u003cbr/\u003eAlthough cell-phones have arrived to these mountains, villagers say they still prefer to whistle and do not fear losing their tradition.\u003cbr/\u003eAbout 20 children are currently learning Kus Dili at the local school.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Bird language has been spoken in Kuskoy since the beginning of time.
