In August, Hurricane Charley pummelled the islands and Florida with 230 kilometre an hour winds. Florida state officials urged almost two (m) million people to evacuate. The storm caused billions of dollars of damage and killed 27 people in Florida and at least five others in the Caribbean. Officials said it was worst storm to hit the US since Hurricane Andrew in 1992. Hurricane Frances struck Florida came three weeks after Charley, striking the coast with pelting rain driven by winds of almost 200 kilometres an hour. As it moved out over the Atlantic, Frances swept over the Bahamas, snapping trees, and tearing apart wooden houses, killing at least two people. Meanwhile the ninth major storm of the season, Hurricane Ivan, was gathering strength in the Atlantic Ocean as it moved towards the Caribbean from the southeast. Ivan cut a swathe across the Caribbean islands, leaving tens of thousands of people homeless. Thirty-seven people were killed on Grenada. At least 14 people were killed in Jamaica, where Ivan caused devastation with monstrous waves, driving rain and winds nearing 250 kilometres an hour. As many as 80 aftershocks rocked the region as survivors and emergency workers struggled with the aftermath of the devastation. The quake destroyed much of Bam's historic landmark - a giant medieval fortress complex of towers, domes and walls, all made of mud-brick, overlooking a walled Old City, parts of which date back two thousand years. Iran's interior minister said 70 percent of residential Bam had been destroyed, and there were no electricity, water or telephone lines. Many of the survivors had to survive in chilly, wet conditions under makeshift tents after their homes were destroyed. The quake shook areas near the coastal city of Al Hoceima, an isolated but picturesque area between the Rif Mountains and the Mediterranean Sea. The town was largely spared, but its surrounding villages were devastated by the 6.5-magnitude quake. The eruption created two new streams of molten rock on its southern slopes. The volcano had been restless since June, but the new lava flows posed no threat to residential areas. Two hikers on the mountain were killed when they were hit by a shower of hot rocks expelled by the volcano. Several other people were injured. One of the dead was a Singaporean citizen, and the other a local tourist. The blast sent a plume of smoke 3000 metres into the air. Vulcanologists said further eruptions were unlikely. The Bromo eruption came as nearly 12-thousand people were evacuated from the vicinity of Mount Awu on Sangihe Island, in northeastern Indonesia. Aere was the second-strongest storm to hit the region this season after Typhoon Rananim, which killed at least 164 people in China and devastated coastal areas south of
