without official diplomatic relations with the island nation.\u003cbr/\u003eBeijing attempts to isolate Taiwan by keeping it out of international organisations and limiting countries who recognise Taipei's government.\u003cbr/\u003eThe latest diplomatic setback came on Tuesday when the island lost another bid to join the United Nations World Health Organisation. \u003cbr/\u003eTaiwan has managed to maintain some friends, some say by \"buying\" relationships with small countries.\u003cbr/\u003eChina can use both economic and political leverage to keep countries from recognising Taipei diplomatically, through its permanent seat on\u003cbr/\u003ethe UN Security Council.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile Taiwan's friends are few, they are loyal with all 25 countries sending delegations to the inauguration.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring the week's festivities, many praised the island's democratic achievements, while others expressed hope that the relationship with China would improve.\u003cbr/\u003eThe head of the US delegation said that the mainland might benefit from Taiwan's political example.\u003cbr/\u003eRepublican Congressman Jim Leach, the leader of a US congressional subcommittee on East Asia and the Pacific, was the US administration's choice to represent Washington at the inauguration.\u003cbr/\u003eFor countries who do have relations with Beijing it is often sensitive to decide who to send to such high-profile events.\u003cbr/\u003eDespite the attendance of Swaziland's king, there was a definite lack of star power at this week's
