We're saying it's an historic day for all the wrong reasons. Today democrats are going to be asked to establish a partnership government with people linked to terrorist organisations. And that is historic but it's historic for all the wrong reasons. And I hope that these institutions do not succeed in putting into government members of terrorist organisations - I think that would be wholly wrong.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Ian Paisley Junior, Democratic Unionist Party \u003cbr/\u003eThe Assembly will first hear a motion for the reinstatement of S-D-L-P deputy leader Seamus Mallon as Deputy First Minister.\u003cbr/\u003eMallon resigned in protest when the Assembly last met on July 15th, when the attempt to select a cross-community Executive failed because of an Ulster Unionist boycott.\u003cbr/\u003eThe anti-Good Friday Agreement Democratic Unionists are then expected to table a motion to have Sinn Fein excluded from the Assembly on the grounds they are not committed to solely peaceful means.\u003cbr/\u003eThe D-U-P needs a majority of unionists to back them in order to have this motion heard.\u003cbr/\u003eThat's unlikely to happen, but the D-U-P remains hopeful the Assembly will be unable to function anyway.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English) \u003cbr/\u003e\"There isn't a cat's chance in hell of seeing a collective decision being made in that place - and certainly we're not going to be participating in collective decisions with terrorists.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Ian Paisley Junior, Democratic Unionist Party \u003cbr/\u003eBut the outlook from other quarters is a little more upbeat. \u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English) \u003cbr/\u003e\"Well, power sharing has not been given a chance to work before in Northern Ireland. There's certainly a great will from people out there in the community to make it work - there's a lot of decisions that have been penned in for over a year now, so this executive will be very busy I believe, and hopefully with a lot of business to be done in a short period of time, we can keep this executive together and hopefully trust will build, but there are no guarantees in this process.
