historic trade agreement with the United States on Tuesday.\u003cbr/\u003eThe trade deal came into effect on 10 December 2001.\u003cbr/\u003eThe deal capped a lengthy reconciliation period which formally began when then US President Bill Clinton lifted the trade embargo against Vietnam in 1994.\u003cbr/\u003eThe agreement gave Vietnam access to US markets under the same low tariffs given to other nations in exchange for opening up its markets to foreign competition and international standards.\u003cbr/\u003eStoryline\u003cbr/\u003eA year after Vietnam and the U-S signed a historic trade pact, sales at this garment factory in Hanoi have hit record levels.\u003cbr/\u003eOrders from huge American retailers, including JC Penny's and K-Mart, have seen sales jump a whopping 400 per cent. \u003cbr/\u003eBy the end of the year trade between the two countries is expected to be worth over 2 billion (b) dollars.\u003cbr/\u003eAs part of the trade deal, Vietnam had to introduce strict economic reforms to meet international standards.\u003cbr/\u003eThese are expected to firmly position Vietnam in its bid to enter the World Trade Organization in coming years.
