And that can sometimes lead to racial tension.\u003cbr/\u003eNext to one of Rome's thriving fruit and vegetable markets is the base for an innovative scheme to help bring people closer together.\u003cbr/\u003eThe beauty of the scheme is that even the poorest Italian or foreign immigrant can take part.\u003cbr/\u003eTime Bank allows people to donate their time and skills into a virtual banking system where debits and credits are measured in terms of time.\u003cbr/\u003eNo money changes hands.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Promoting cultural exchanges - like traditions, language, food and dance - this allows foreigners and Italians to get closer,\" according to Angela Scalzo.  She is responsible for the Multicultural Bank of Time of Rome, and General Secretary of SOS Racism.\u003cbr/\u003eSwapping skills, even something as simple as making a pizza, is a typical exchange.\u003cbr/\u003eThe concept of community exchange or bartering started in the United State in the 1980's.  Now there are Time Banks in more than 30 countries worldwide.\u003cbr/\u003eThe original inspiration for the Multicultural Time Bank was the need to combat racial prejudice. \u003cbr/\u003eFounded in 1998 there are now 600 hundred members in the scheme.  Many of those joined in the last two years as the economic crisis made the cash-free bank concept even more attractive to hard up consumers.\u003cbr/\u003eAt its most basic level, time banking is spending an hour of your time doing something for somebody else in your community. \u003cbr/\u003eThat hour goes into the Time Bank as a 'Time Euro' credit that can then be 'spent' on having someone else do something for you. \u003cbr/\u003eIt works just like a normal bank says Maria Luisa Petrucci, President of the National Association of Time Banks: \u003cbr/\u003e\"When people join Time Bank they receive a membership card as well as a cheque book - just like in a proper bank. You can spend them getting you car fixed or attending a class.\u003cbr/\u003eDance teacher teacher Antonella Cinelli joined Time Bank three years ago.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Since I am quite good at cooking 'grandma's cake'- or at least I hope so - I met with an older lady to make it together.  In exchange she told me the story of her experience with her nephews,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's a simple idea, but it helps to bind the fabric of the community together.\u003cbr/\u003eFor older people especially the exchange can also counter loneliness.  \u003cbr/\u003eAnna Maria Lazzari has been part of Time Bank for ten years:  \"Many of us made friends.  We go out together for dinner, we go to the cinema or to the theatre.  It is a total experience,\" she explains.\u003cbr/\u003eHelping those less fortunate, like this choir of people with mental disabilities, brings benefits that are hard to put a cash value on.  \u003cbr/\u003eForging stronger community relations is a process known as building 'social capital'. \u003cbr/\u003eIt works just as well for individuals.\u003cbr/\u003eBelgian yoga teacher Liliane Ceulemans has been in Italy for forty years, but she felt she was becoming isolated: \"The reason why I joined Time Bank was basically the need to get in touch with people in my district because I spend lot of time away because of my job. So Time Bank allowed me to relate to the others.\"\u003cbr/\u003eIn the academic world, much has been written about the wider economic context of Time Banking.\u003cbr/\u003eDoes money bring happiness? Can economic happiness be sustained?
