It also...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eCrimea, a strategic peninsula in the Black Sea, has become the chief flashpoint in the battle for Ukraine.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is a pro-Russian part of Ukraine separated from the rest of the country geographically, historically and politically. \u003cbr/\u003eIt also hosts Russia's Black Sea Fleet. \u003cbr/\u003eOn its eastern shore, a finger of land reaches out almost to Russia. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's best known in the West as the site of the 1945 Yalta Conference, sometimes also referred to as the Crimea Conference, where Soviet dictator Josef Stalin, President Franklin D. Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill sealed the post-war division of Europe.\u003cbr/\u003eBut it only became part of Ukraine when Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev transferred the peninsula to his native land in 1954. \u003cbr/\u003eThis hardly mattered until the Soviet Union broke up in 1991 and Crimea ended up in an independent Ukraine. \u003cbr/\u003eDespite that, nearly 60 percent of its population of two (m) million identify themselves as Russians.\u003cbr/\u003eSergei Khrushchev, a son of Nikita Khrushchev, currently lives in the US.\u003cbr/\u003eHe is a retired senior fellow from the Thomas Wilson Institute For International Studies at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. \u003cbr/\u003eWhen asked about his father's decision to give Crimea to Ukraine he said that \"it was a business decision\".\u003cbr/\u003e\"My father didn't give Crimea to the land of my mother. It was a business decision - how to build the canal. It was not gift because everything belonged to the Soviet Union, not to Ukraine, not to Russia,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eKhrushchev said that people in Crimea now face an uncertain future, but given what has happened in Kiev over the past three months, he said it makes sense for the region to become part of Russia.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Months ago I would say you it would be better for them to be part of Ukraine,\" Khrushchev said, \"today, it will be better for them in Russia. Even in the shadow of this scandal, Russia will invest huge money on them.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSome people living in Russia already consider Crimea to be part of their country.\u003cbr/\u003e\"For Russia the Crimea is the historical territory for almost 250 years. This is what had been conquered by the Empress Catherine the Great and her soldiers. So, if for the American people Pearl Harbour has some significant meaning, you know, then for Russia the Crimea is kind of the same, it is Russia's after all,\" said Moscow resident Valery.\u003cbr/\u003eUkrainians living in Russia have a different opinion.\u003cbr/\u003eMost of them don't support Russian military intervention in Crimea.\u003cbr/\u003eVasili Antoniv has lived in Moscow for 50 years. \u003cbr/\u003eHe is Ukrainian and was born in Krasnodon city in the Luhansk region of southeastern Ukraine. \u003cbr/\u003eAntoniv said regardless of what language people speak, if they all live in Ukraine, they are Ukrainians.\u003cbr/\u003e\"People (there) who speak Russian are Ukrainians. And they know that they are the Ukrainians. One cannot divide us on Russian-speaking or Ukrainian-speaking (people) or that we go to another church. We are the Ukrainians,\" he said. \u003cbr/\u003eOn Sunday, Crimea will vote whether to secede, and perhaps join Russia, rejecting rule by new leaders in Kiev who seek to forge stronger economic ties with Europe.\u003cbr/\u003eThe West and Ukraine's upstart government in Kiev believe the region's vote to secede is unconstitutional. \u003cbr/\u003eBut Moscow doesn't recognise leaders in Kiev as legitimate since they pushed Ukraine's pro-Russian president from power last month.\u003cbr/\u003eRussian troops have occupied parts of the Crimean peninsula for over a week now.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Russian government said it's deployed its troops to Crimea to defend ethnic Russians, who claimed they felt under threat.\u003cbr/\u003eSevastopol, Crimea, Ukraine - 13 March 2014\u003cbr/\u003e1.
