Wide of camp\u003cbr/\u003eFour months ago devastating floods covered one-fifth of Pakistan, affecting some 20 million of its 175 million people. \u003cbr/\u003eNearly 2,000 people died, while millions were left homeless, according to the United Nations.\u003cbr/\u003eMany are still surviving without basic sanitation or healthcare - especially mothers and their babies.\u003cbr/\u003eIn a maternity ward in the town of Kot Addu, a newborn baby takes its first breath and cries out loud. Its chances of survival are not good.\u003cbr/\u003ePakistan has one of the worst infant mortality rates in the world.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to UNICEF, ten percent of Pakistani children won't reach their 5th birthday, with the majority of deaths caused by diarrhoea, pneumonia or vaccine-preventable diseases. \u003cbr/\u003eUNICEF also claims 40-percent of children under five in Pakistan are underweight, in a country that spends just 4 US dollars of public expenditure, per capita, on health. UNICEF recommends spending 45 US dollars per capita.\u003cbr/\u003eMillions of people were driven from their homes as devastating floods swept across much of the country in August and September. \u003cbr/\u003eMany people were forced to live in temporary camps, rows of tents where privacy is limited, sanitation often non-existent, and health is compromised.\u003cbr/\u003eAt Baseera Camp for displaced people, Zubaida Bibi cradles one son in her arms. \u003cbr/\u003eOf five children, only one has escaped illness following the floods. Two boys and a girl have skin infections and the oldest daughter shows signs of malaria.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Myself and my children have scabies. Good medical treatment should be provided for us\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen the scale of the disaster became apparent, the government and international aid groups sent medical teams into the crowded camps and flooded villages. \u003cbr/\u003eFields were sprayed to ward off malaria-carrying mosquitoes, and clean drinking water was distributed.\u003cbr/\u003eDoctors hold clinics to try and give camp residents some treatment. \u003cbr/\u003eLong lines of people queue up to see a doctor. \u003cbr/\u003eIn many areas, places where poverty is rife and health care was poor to nonexistent before the floods, people are now getting access to rare medical attention.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the problems are still widespread.\u003cbr/\u003eDr Nabeel Roshan is treating patients in the Baseera camp. \"There are all types of infection here\" he says. \"There's no proper system for cleaning or sanitation, and now mosquitoes are breeding and because of that malaria is spreading. In these days, dengue fever has also been spreading in the camp\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe UN says Nearly a million cases of acute diarrhoea have been recorded. \u003cbr/\u003eThere are close to 400-thousand suspected cases of malaria, and reported cases of skin disease and respiratory infections have topped 1-point-2 (m)million cases each. \u003cbr/\u003eIn Multan, the closest large city to a number of camps for people displaced in the floods, Fatima Bibi has brought her children for treatment. \u003cbr/\u003e\"My children are suffering from eruptions, small boils on their skin, due to insect bites and dirty water. Our homes have been swept away. Myself and my children are in a distressed condition. The water is dirty and poisonous and all my children are sick\" she says. \u003cbr/\u003eDespite initial criticism that the government's response was too slow and patchy, authorities say the health intervention was widespread and prompt enough to prevent any massive wave of fatal disease. \u003cbr/\u003eThe World Health Organisation (WHO) says that many women, in particular, are facing acute health care problems in camps for displaced people.\u003cbr/\u003eNew mothers and their babies are particularly vulnerable. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I mean starting from deliveries (birth) as a child, then proper nutrition. If there is no proper nutrition it will affect the height and weight of the female and the child as well. And there are a number of infectious diseases that need to be treated like diarrhoea, like acute respiratory infection, like vaccine preventable diseases, and this is all the services which we are providing to childhood\" says Dr Shadoul, WHO's deputy head of mission in Pakistan.\u003cbr/\u003e\"They are not being able to have enough privacy to breastfeed their children. working to improve conditions in camps, and also provide care not just for newborns, but for other children as they grow up, including proper nutrition, and offering
