Mid of cattleman locking the pen\u003cbr/\u003eCattle and wildlife in Kenya usually compete for territory - there,'s only so much savannah on which to graze and make a home.\u003cbr/\u003eBut a breed created from an ancient cow gene is improving the rangelands for wildlife, so that cattle and wild animals can thrive together.\u003cbr/\u003eThey are a hearty breed, dubbed \"God,'s gift to cattlemen\" by some in the industry.\u003cbr/\u003eBut at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya,'s Laikipia District, Boran cattle could also be deemed God,'s gift to wildlife.\u003cbr/\u003eLivestock manager Giles Prettejohn says Boran cattle are a  tool for improving rangelands:\u003cbr/\u003e\"What they do not eat, they trample. As rangelands improve, wildlife numbers increase, attracting more tourists to the area.\u003cbr/\u003eOl Pejeta Conservancy is home to the world,'s largest single herd of pure Boran cattle, consisting of 200 animals.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Boran is one of the oldest breeds in Africa, originating thousands of years ago from zebu cattle and descending directly from Borana cattle in Ethiopia.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to researchers, the genetic composition of Kenyan Boran cattle is unique, with traits from European-Near East and indigenous African breeds.\u003cbr/\u003eToday,'s breed, known as \"improved Boran,\" was developed in the 1920s by European ranchers in Kenya, primarily as a beef animal. \u003cbr/\u003ePrettejohn says Boran cattle are the \"animal of choice\" for Africa,'s harsh environments.\u003cbr/\u003e\"What we have developed now is the improved Boran  - (it) is as good a beef quality as any European breed with the size and the weight. And yet it can survive in these African conditions which are prone to long periods of drought. More than that, the disease problems that we get from wildlife carrying parasites like ticks which pass on diseases to cattle: Boran are less prone to those ticks and their diseases than other European cattle.\" \u003cbr/\u003eMany African countries want Boran cattle, but often, strict regulations prevent them from importing the animals because of the threat of diseases.\u003cbr/\u003eHence the development of Boran embryos for export.\u003cbr/\u003eBoran cattle found in Australia, the United States, Zambia, Tanzania, and Uganda all originated from genetic exports of Boran cattle from Kenya between the 1970s and 1990s.\u003cbr/\u003eA rising demand from Zimbabwe and South Africa prompted Ol Pejeta Conservancy to start producing and exporting Boran embryos to these countries starting in 1992.\u003cbr/\u003eOl Pejeta has 300 pure registered Borans acting as the conservancy,'s genetic store.\u003cbr/\u003eTwice a year, select bulls and cows are put into quarantine, where they are tested, cleaned, and sanitised to prevent any disease transmission.\u003cbr/\u003eEmbryos are then created and stored before being shipped out. \u003cbr/\u003eThe conservancy exported 1,600 Boran embryos to South Africa between 2000 and 2006 at an average price of 2-thousand US dollars (1,500 Euros) for each embryo.\u003cbr/\u003eBut ranchers in Kenya, commonly dubbed \"Kenyan cowboys,\" can buy right from the source.\u003cbr/\u003eGordon Murray is managing director of the Lolomarik Farm on the northern slopes of Mount Kenya. \u003cbr/\u003eHe has come to Ol Pejeta Conservancy to purchase some Boran bulls.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It,'s got to have a good long back, lots of meat on the back end, must have dark pigmentation - must not be pink or anything because of the sunlight you will get cancerous things. compared to other breeds, the cattle have a longer lifespan, mature at an early age, are very fertile, are nurturing and stay together in
