Giraffes\u003cbr/\u003eMany parts of storm-shattered New Orleans were still under water on Wednesday, with large sections of the city's motorways, houses and office buildings still submerged.\u003cbr/\u003eThe evacuation of residents was stepped up Wednesday - with people being helicoptered and bused out of the flooded city.\u003cbr/\u003eDespite the danger of disease from the putrid, sewage-laden floodwaters, some 10-000 or so survivors of Hurricane Katrina are still refusing to leave the city. \u003cbr/\u003ePolice and soldiers went house to house on Wednesday trying to coax them out after New Orleans' mayor, Ray Nagin, ordered everyone remaining to be evacuated, by force if necessary, because of the risk of fires and disease.\u003cbr/\u003eHe warned that the fetid water could spread disease and that natural gas was leaking all over town.\u003cbr/\u003eUS health officials also urged those still in the city to leave after government tests confirmed that floodwater bacteria associated with sewage were at least ten times higher than acceptable safety levels. \u003cbr/\u003eThe officials said at least four people may have already died of a waterborne bacterial infection circulating in Katrina's floodwaters.\u003cbr/\u003ePolice say they are focusing initially on residents who are willing to leave voluntarily.\u003cbr/\u003eSeveral residents said they heard Nagin's order to leave on portable radios and were reluctantly complying.\u003cbr/\u003eEvacuees were taken by boat, ambulance and military vehicles to a central gathering point, where they were then shuttled to safer locations.\u003cbr/\u003eA spokesman for the US Army 82nd airborne said those who had family in other US cities were provided transportation to the location of their choice.\u003cbr/\u003eThose without families in other US cities were taken to shelters.\u003cbr/\u003eThe stepped-up evacuation came as workers struggled to find and count the corpses decaying in the 90-degree Fahrenheit (32-degree Celsius) heat.\u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile, the head of FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) announced a plan to hand out debit cards to Katrina victims.\u003cbr/\u003eFEMA director Michael Brown \"The concept is to get them some cash in hand, which allows them, empowers them, to make their own decisions about what do they need to have to start rebuilding their lives.\"\u003cbr/\u003eHe said \"this is something that FEMA has not done before. We think it's a great way to, again, empower these hurricane survivors to really start rebuilding their lives.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe cards are worth two-thousand US dollars and will be issued on a one-per-household basis.\u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile, most of the animals at Audubon Zoo in New Orleans seem to have weathered the hurricane, but a skeleton crew is working hard to keep the animals alive in Katrina's aftermath.\u003cbr/\u003eA small group of zookeepers and staff were working to clear downed trees and to account for all the animals.\u003cbr/\u003eSome of the most vulnerable creatures were being transferred out to other zoos on Wednesday, including several macaws and eagles.\u003cbr/\u003eZoo staff said they hope to transfer a pair of African lions in coming days as well.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Audubon Zoo did, however, lose some of its 1400 animals. Zookeepers say they have been too busy feeding survivors to take a census, but casualties included two sea otters that were moved from their normal environment to different waters and died from stress
