Various of civilians fleeing Sake towards Goma after government troops and allied militias attacked M23 rebels holding the town \u003cbr/\u003eThousands of people fled the eastern town of Sake in the Democratic Republic of Congo on Thursday amid fierce fighting between Congolese government soldiers and rebel fighters.\u003cbr/\u003eFighting broke out in Sake out Thursday just before noon.\u003cbr/\u003eThe town was seized by rebels on Wednesday after they took control of the strategic provincial capital of Goma, about 17 miles (27 kilometres) away.\u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile, the leader of the rebel group known as M23 headed to neighbouring Uganda where recent talks were held between the presidents of Congo and its neighbours Uganda and Rwanda.\u003cbr/\u003eThe presidents from Congo, Rwanda and Uganda who met in the Ugandan capital of Kampala already have called on the fighters to give up the territory they now control. \u003cbr/\u003eMilitants seeking to overthrow the government have vowed to push forward despite mounting international pressure.\u003cbr/\u003eRebel spokesman Lt. Col. Vianney Kazarama vowed on Thursday that the fighters would press forward toward seizing the strategic eastern town of Bukavu.\u003cbr/\u003eIf the town were to fall it would mark the biggest gain in rebel territory in nearly a decade.\u003cbr/\u003eAccusations being traded between Congo and Rwanda have raised fears that the rebels' advance could spark a new regional war in a highly volatile corner of the world. \u003cbr/\u003eAlready the violence in eastern Congo has forced more than 100,000 people from their homes, more than half of whom are children, according to the UN children's agency.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Thursday heavily armed M23 soldiers were seen racing to reinforce their comrades as the tussle for Sake continued. \u003cbr/\u003eThousands of civilians, with possessions tucked under arms or balanced on heads, flooded in the opposite direction. \u003cbr/\u003eWhile the rebels have vowed to overthrow President Joseph Kabila's government, they remain some 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometres) from the capital of Kinshasa in a country of dense jungle with few paved roads.\u003cbr/\u003eThe rebels are believed to be backed by Rwanda, and to a smaller extent by Uganda, which are accused of equipping them with sophisticated arms, including night vision goggles and 120 mm mortars.\u003cbr/\u003eBoth Rwanda and Uganda have repeatedly denied supporting the M23 movement and have faced little international criticism over the allegations.\u003cbr/\u003eGoma was last threatened by rebels in 2008 when fighters from the now-defunct National Congress for the Defence of the
