The famous quote was proven today as a handful of love letters written by J.D. SALINGER to 18 year old JOYCE MAYNARD was put up for sale at Sotheby's.\u003cbr/\u003eMaynard says she put the letters up for auction block so she can send her kids to college.\u003cbr/\u003eSalinger, the reclusive author, was incensed by what he felt was a betrayal.\u003cbr/\u003eBy the time the auction was over the letters were sold, Maynard was a richer woman, Sotheby's would make a profit, and Salinger would keep his privacy after all.\u003cbr/\u003eIn a day punctuated by the big sale of a John Adams letter to a colleague, J.D. Salinger was sold out ... and given back his privacy.\u003cbr/\u003eEarly on Tuesday, Sotheby's auction house sold Adam's letter to colleague Archibald Bullock, for a remarkable 575-thousand dollars. \u003cbr/\u003eLater in the day, a first-edition copy of Daniel Defoe's \"Robinson Crusoe\", published in 1719 sold for well over 100-thousand dollars.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the biggest surprise of the day was the enormous interest in 14 love letters written by author J.D. Salinger.\u003cbr/\u003eIn 1972, the 53 year-old Salinger began courting Joyce Maynard.  Maynard was only 18 years old and just finishing her freshman year at Yale at the time.\u003cbr/\u003eLater the two lived together, but the relationship lasted only nine months.\u003cbr/\u003eIn recent years, needing the money for her family, Maynard decided to sell the letters she's kept for more than 25 years. \u003cbr/\u003eMaynard, now an author herself, earned much criticism when she published excerpts of the letters in her 1998 book \"At Home In the World.\"\u003cbr/\u003eCritics may not have been interested in the letters, but many others were.  The letters were expected to sell for 60 to 80 thousand dollars (US), but they earned nearly twice that amount.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe final selling price was $156,000 (US).\u003cbr/\u003eArt buyer BRUCE GIMELSON says he thought the letters would sell for close to $200 thousand dollars.  His final bid for an anonymous buyer was $135 thousand (US).\u003cbr/\u003eBut in the biggest surprise of all, Sotheby's announced that the buyer was philanthropist and Salinger sympathizer, PETER NORTON.  Norton said \"I share the widely expressed view that the work should be bought by someone sympathetic to Mr Salinger...
