It is very much a plant of the southwest Midlands. There are  huge quantities of it here many grows on the apple trees. As a tree parasite it grows on favoured hosts and apple trees are one of its best hosts. But apple trees grow all over the country and mistletoe is rare in the rest of the country. Pan down from mistletoe to couple kissing\u003cbr/\u003eKiss someone under the mistletoe and you're doing what the Druids did centuries ago. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is thought to have been an ancient fertility tradition, re-invented in the18th century by the Victorians for Christmas. \u003cbr/\u003eBut it's an enduring tradition and early in December buyers and sellers attend mistletoe auctions to buy bunches filled with berries. \u003cbr/\u003eThe mistletoe on show at this auction may look abundant, but Christmas mistletoe is rare and expensive. \u003cbr/\u003eJohnathan Briggs is the UK's foremost Mistletoe Expert. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says that in England it grows on apple trees, but only in certain regions. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter the autumn's apple crop, the mistletoe is more abundant, just in time to earn apple farmers some extra money for Christmas. \u003cbr/\u003eMistletoe is a parasitic plants. It nestles into the branches of host trees, then penetrates the bark to sap nutrients and water. \u003cbr/\u003eThis weakens and, in some cases, kills the tree. \u003cbr/\u003eBuyers come to Worcestershire from across the UK to buy large bunches of the plant which they will divide up and sell in sprigs (small bunches). \u003cbr/\u003eA sprig of mistletoe wasn't always so innocent. \u003cbr/\u003eMistletoe was regarded by the ancients as having supernatural powers, sometimes good and sometimes evil. \u003cbr/\u003eTwo thousand years ago, mistletoe was known by some as a beneficial medicinal herb. \u003cbr/\u003eBriggs says that in parts of Europe it is still considered to have medicinal properities. \u003cbr/\u003eIn Scandinavian mythology, however, mistletoe was responsible for the destruction of the sun god Baldur the Beautiful.   \u003cbr/\u003eMistletoe is only a small wisp of a plant, so why would the ancients credit it with such awesome powers as healing or overpowering gods? \u003cbr/\u003eThe reason is because mistletoes are capable of killing large trees, even the massive oaks venerated by the Druids.  \u003cbr/\u003eAs the ancients gazed up into tree branches, they recognized that the tufts of mistletoe, though intimately associated with the tree, were nonetheless different from the rest of the tree. \u003cbr/\u003eThe modern English word \"mistletoe\" is a derivation of the Saxon word \"mistl-tan,\" meaning \"different twig.\"  \u003cbr/\u003eSince the Victorians rehabilitated the 'pagan' plant, it has been associated with Christmas and kissing. \u003cbr/\u003eBriggs says that you can only kiss under a sprig with berries and you are allowed one kiss for each berry, which you should pick off the branch.\u003cbr/\u003eBriggs sells
