of Greenpeace.\u003cbr/\u003eKumi Naidoo took over on Monday as the environmental group's executive director.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says climate change makes his new job a logical addition to his resume because there's no point in addressing other development issues if the whole planet is under threat.\u003cbr/\u003eGerd Leipold, whom Naidoo is replacing at Greenpeace, says his successor represents a watershed for the organisation.\u003cbr/\u003eLeipold, a German who once headed Greenpeace's nuclear disarmament campaign, says Naidoo is the first African to head Greenpeace, and the first to come from outside the organisation. \u003cbr/\u003eNaidoo, 44, has fought for the rights of women and children, who are amongst the most vulnerable when droughts bring hunger, or floods disrupt livelihoods. \u003cbr/\u003eHe has pushed to strengthen international cooperation and ensure the concerns of poor countries are heard when rich nations plan the future. \u003cbr/\u003eGreenpeace will be present when negotiators sit down next month in Copenhagen to try to draft an agreement to cut greenhouse gas emissions blamed for global warming. \u003cbr/\u003eAt least 40 world leaders have said they plan to attend the Copenhagen conference, which follows two years of tough United Nations-led negotiations to draft a climate change agreement to replace the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, which expires in 2012.\u003cbr/\u003eNaidoo argues that industrialised nations need not only do their fair share to reduce emissions and commit to reduction targets, but assist developing nations with a global climate fund, helping poorer nations cope with the severe weather associated with climate change and get access to clean energy to fuel their rise out of poverty.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This summit is like no other it wrong and all the world is going to sink,\" he added.\u003cbr/\u003eUN scientists say rich countries must cut carbon emissions by 25 percent to 40 percent from 1990 levels by 2020 to prevent Earth's temperatures from rising 2 degrees Celsius (4 degrees Fahrenheit) above its average temperature before the industrial era began 150 years ago.\u003cbr/\u003eAny rise beyond that could trigger climate catastrophe, they say.\u003cbr/\u003eWealthy nations are seeking broad controls on emissions from all countries in any new global pact reached in Copenhagen.\u003cbr/\u003eSome developing nations have said tough emissions limits would likely hamper their economic grow and that industrialised nations should carry most of the burden, calling for compensation for the economic costs of reducing emissions. \u003cbr/\u003eGreenpeace last month said at least 140 (b) billion US dollars a year would be needed.\u003cbr/\u003eNaidoo spoke to AP Television during a break in a day spent organising paperwork for his visa in preparation for his move from Johannesburg to Amsterdam, Greenpeace's international base.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile some might still think of Greenpeace mainly for staging dramatic protests, according to Gerd Leipold, whom Naidoo is replacing, the organisation has been working for a decade to become more diverse in scope and outlook. \u003cbr/\u003eIn 2007, it opened an office in Congo headed by a Congolese activist who this year won the Right Livelihood Award, sometimes called the alternative Nobel, for his efforts to save his country's rainforests. \u003cbr/\u003eGreenpeace opened its first Africa regional office in Johannesburg last year.\u003cbr/\u003eNaidoo said Greenpeace was committed to dialogue, but also knew when to deploy a headline-grabbing protest. \u003cbr/\u003eHe said he learnt as an anti-apartheid activist the importance of being \"strong in our voice and our actions\".\u003cbr/\u003eNaidoo took part in nationwide student protests against apartheid as a 15-year-old, and by 16 had been kicked out of school. \u003cbr/\u003eHe completed his high school studies at home and went on to earn a law degree in South Africa and, as a Rhodes scholar, an Oxford doctorate in political sociology.\u003cbr/\u003eFollowing Mandela's release in 1990 after 27 years in prison, Naidoo returned from Britain to work for the African National Congress and other anti-apartheid groups. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter apartheid's end in 1994, his work ranged from campaigning against violence against women, promoting adult education and acting as spokesman for South Africa's Independent Electoral Commission.\u003cbr/\u003eIn 2005, he was among the founders of the Global Call to Action Against Poverty. \u003cbr/\u003eMore recently, he has led the Global Campaign for Climate Action, which brings together environmental, aid and human rights groups, unions, scientists and others and has organised mass demonstrations around climate
