Close of jar being sealed and put in cupboard\u003cbr/\u003eThe number of companies producing venom for antidotes has shrunk so drastically, that demand is pushing up its value.\u003cbr/\u003eThe venom is used as to combat lethal snake and insect bites, but now doctors believe it may hold the key to understanding and treating other illnesses.\u003cbr/\u003eThis Puff Adder is inside Latoxan, France's biggest producer of venom. It's also one of the deadliest snakes in the world.\u003cbr/\u003eIts bite releases a slow acting cytotoxic venom. \u003cbr/\u003eIt causes severe tissue damage, and if it remains untreated it can spread, causing gangrene and secondary infections which can result in loss of fingers and limbs.\u003cbr/\u003eIt can cause circulatory collapse and renal failure, which can result in death.\u003cbr/\u003eThis Puff Adder is just one of hundreds of snakes from seventy different species that are kept at this high security laboratory in Valence in south eastern France.\u003cbr/\u003eThere are also hundreds of scorpions.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's a strange place and visitors here are rare.\u003cbr/\u003eThe snakes are stored in a central location, only accessible through a warren of corridors and a battery of doors.\u003cbr/\u003eIn this one room is a collection of thousands of the most dangerous species in the world.\u003cbr/\u003eEach animal is carefully tagged, with it's medical history. \u003cbr/\u003eIt means every drop of venom which leaves this laboratory can be traced back, regardless of where in the world it ends up.\u003cbr/\u003eLatoxan is France's biggest producer of venom and it considers the safety and traceability of its products a priority.\u003cbr/\u003eSnakes and scorpions are fed and stored in racks inside a room kept at strictly controlled levels of temperature and humidity.\u003cbr/\u003eEach is milked once per month to remove what amounts to a few spoonfuls of venom. \u003cbr/\u003eA snake can produce around 800 milligrams each time, that's the size of the average tablet, while scorpions produce far less. \u003cbr/\u003eThe whole of this laboratory produces just 850 grams (28 ounces) each year. \u003cbr/\u003eLatoxan CEO Harold de Pomyers says: \"The species we are housing here come from all over the world and anti-venom manufacturers are trying to develop regional anti-venom products and we need to cover these many different species.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to de Pomyers venom is a labour intensive industry and the costs of production are high.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says: \"The quantities we are getting from milking are very small and accordingly the prices may seem very expensive.  Prices of venoms, of snake venoms, range from about 500 Euros ($650 USD), to 4000 Euros, ($5,200 USD) per gram (0.03 ounces) and the price of the scorpions range from  between 10,000 Euros ($13,000 USD) per gram (0.03 ounces) and 30,000 Euros ($39,000 USD).\"\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Latoxan, each year snake bites kill more people than cholera, around a 100,000 people.\u003cbr/\u003eScientists here believe the problem is getting worse because it's increasingly difficult to get access to anti-venom serum. \u003cbr/\u003eIn 1980 there were around seventy companies making anti-venom serums worldwide.\u003cbr/\u003eNow only twenty companies like this exist, and production is down to around a tenth of what it used to be.\u003cbr/\u003eThat's because the industry is no longer considered profitable and investment in this area of medicine is not available.\u003cbr/\u003eLatoxan claims to be the biggest producer of anti-venom serum globally and it has a turnover of 1.6 million Euros ($2 million USD).\u003cbr/\u003eSome scientists believe venom is a vital part of medical research.\u003cbr/\u003eProfessor Max Goyffon, an immunologist and biochemist, argues venom can produce a large spectrum of molecules which are in demand because of their impact on a wide variety of pharmacological targets including the nervous system, muscles, haemostats, kidneys, heart and blood circulation.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Goyffon there is already clinical development in the field of oncology, pain relief, diabetes, haematology and cardiology etcetera. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says even the cosmetics industry is starting to show interest in venom as a natural product.\u003cbr/\u003eGoyffon says: \"Venom potential is  huge. We have calculated than in snake venom, or precisely in scorpion venom, we can find few hundred unknown different toxins. We only know one or two per cent of them. There is about 2000 different species of scorpions, if you multiply these 2000 species by hundreds toxins, you will get  million of substances to analysed and to study.
