products.\u003cbr/\u003eAssistant US Trade Representative Joseph Papovich said some US companies are concerned that continued high levels of piracy will make it difficult for them to continue to operate in China.\u003cbr/\u003eHe named music, movies and software as the main targets of piracy, along with brand-name consumer products such as detergent, shampoo, cosmetics, razors, batteries and pharmaceuticals.\u003cbr/\u003eThe International Intellectual Property Alliance, a trade group, estimates that China's piracy of software, music and movies had cost businesses 979 (m) million US dollars in lost sales in 2000.\u003cbr/\u003eUS software giant Adobe System has adopted a unique approach to battling piracy in China where 99 percent of its products are used illegally.\u003cbr/\u003eAdobe's manager for China, Jordan Pi has built a reputation in the local press as the king of anti-piracy.\u003cbr/\u003eThe strategy has helped boost Adobe's profitability in China by several hundred percent.\u003cbr/\u003eJordan works closely with lawyers and China's two anti piracy units - the National Copyright Bureau and the Commercial and Industrial Management Bureau - to prosecute companies found using his products illegally.\u003cbr/\u003ePi says that police raids, law suits and public punishment are the best way to educate people in China who are largely ignorant of the laws protecting intellectual property.\u003cbr/\u003eChina still relies primarily on so-called \"administrative sanctions\" to punish counterfeiters and pirates, and rarely resorts to criminal prosecution.\u003cbr/\u003eUS officials say fines for piracy are \"a slap on the wrist\" and are too low to effectively deter offenders.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Papovich stressed the US hasn't threatened to complain to the WTO about China's handling of intellectual property rights.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says China has only been a WTO member for just over a month, and is already making a greater
