They had a concrete class, you  know concrete's really one of the main building materials for civil engineers. So they  built canoes out of concrete, and back then they weighed about 300 or 400 pounds, and  so it kind of caught on with some of our students, and for the past eight years we've  been doing it on a national level.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPERCAPTION: Michael Peralta, Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers\u003cbr/\u003eThe students are competing for \"best-boat-bragging-rights\" and this year's coveted title  of \"Capital Canoe.\"\u003cbr/\u003eA more substantial reward will be the nine thousand dollar scholarship awarded to the  winners.\u003cbr/\u003eThe event requires ingenuity on the part of its competitors, who manage to design their  concrete canoes in such a way that they float.\u003cbr/\u003eJohn Tobash, a professor of engineering at Cleveland State University, explained the  physics behind it.\u003cbr/\u003e\" Well, the principle of buoyancy, that is the weight of the volume of water displaced, is  less than the weight of the total canoe plus the riders, and that'll keep them afloat. You  have an equilibrium there, buoyancy force versus weight. If the weight is greater than  the volume displaced then you're going to sink.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPERCAPTION: John Tobash\u003cbr/\u003eAfter the boats' buoyancy had been tested, and the teams had battled it out through the  qualifying races, the final sprint race took place.\u003cbr/\u003eSome of the competitors took it all a little more seriously than their peers.\u003cbr/\u003eA disappointing result prompted one competitor to find solace in her mother's arms.\u003cbr/\u003eFor others the main issue was staying afloat.\u003cbr/\u003e\" No, no not at all.
