Wide shot of FDA building \u003cbr/\u003eA study to be released next week in the British Journal 'The Lancet' suggests that doctors may soon be able to detect ovarian cancer in its earliest stages with a simple blood test. \u003cbr/\u003eThe medical community and advocates for ovarian cancer patients are hopeful it could represent a major advance in combating a disease which kills an estimated 14-thousand women in the United States alone every year. \u003cbr/\u003eDoctors estimate that some 80 per cent of women with ovarian cancer are diagnosed too late to prevent the disease, or its spread. \u003cbr/\u003eThe study found that a new computer-based diagnostic test can accurately distinguish between blood samples from women with ovarian cancer and those without the disease. \u003cbr/\u003eThe test, which recognises patterns of proteins in blood, is also able to identify the disease in its earliest stages when treatment is most effective.\u003cbr/\u003eThe findings offer hope that an effective diagnostic test can be developed for a deadly form of cancer for which there is no reliable screening method. \u003cbr/\u003eResearchers believe that the same technique, detecting disease by protein patterns, could be used to develop accurate tests for other types of cancer and other diseases.\u003cbr/\u003eThe study was conducted by researchers at the National Cancer
